Waves Drop Legends Classic Contest to UCSB

MALIBU, California " Kameron Edwards (27 points) and Colbey Ross (25 points) set new career highs but the Pepperdine men's basketball team fell to UC Santa Barbara, 92-84, in a Progressive Legends Classic subregional game on Monday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.

The four-team tournament concludes on Tuesday night when Pepperdine (1-3) plays Oral Roberts (1-3) in the consolation game at 7:30 p.m. Montana (3-1), which defeated Oral Roberts 69-64 in Monday night's first game, plays UCSB (2-2) in the championship at 5 p.m.

  • Sophomore forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) scored his 27 points on 13-for-18 shooting. He also had five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Edwards' previous career high was 17 points.
  • Freshman guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) hit the 25-point mark in just his fourth college game. His previous best was 11 points. He made seven of nine shots, sank three three-pointers and was 8-for-9 from the foul line. He added five rebounds and four assists.
  • Freshman guard Trae Berhow (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) reached double-figures for the fourth time in four games with 10 points. He also had a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Junior forward Harrison Meads (New Plymouth, New Zealand/Laramie County CC), in his longest outing of the season, had eight points and five rebounds.
  • Sophomore forward Nolan Taylor (Keller, Texas/Keller HS) contributed eight points and six rebounds.

  • The Waves outshot the Gauchos 53.6% to 52.4%, but attempted seven fewer shots, largely due to 20 turnovers. UCSB only committed six turnovers and had a 19-7 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Pepperdine enjoyed a big 39-22 advantage on the boards, including 12-6 on the offensive end.
  • UCSB made 10 three-pointers to the Waves' five.
  • All five Gaucho starters scored in double-figures, led by Max Heidegger's 24 points.

Pepperdine led on a few occasions in the first half, with the last lead coming at 31-30 after two free throws by Ross. But UCSB ended the first half on a 12-2 run and led 42-33 at the break.

Both teams scored 50 or more points in the second half, and though the Waves upped their shooting to 62.1% after the break, they couldn't ever catch up to the Gauchos.

It was a four-point game a couple of times, including at 64-60 with 8 1/2 minutes to go after a Ross three-pointer. But the Gauchos scored the next 10 points to take their biggest lead at 74-60 with 5 1/2 minutes left. The Waves would only get as close as five points the rest of the way.

  • Senior guard Amadi Udenyi (concussion) returned after missing the last two games. Another expected starter, junior guard Eric Cooper (shoulder), has yet to play this season and remains day-to-day.
  • This was the 73rd meeting between Pepperdine and UCSB but the first since 2007-08.
