MALIBU, California — The #5 Pepperdine men's volleyball team concludes its season-opening five-match homestand on Friday night when the Waves meet #7 Lewis. It's a battle between two 2021 NCAA Tournament participants and the first ranked opponent Pepperdine will have faced this year.

HOME MATCH TICKET POLICIES — Due to L.A. OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 3-3 all-time against Lewis. The last meeting was in 2019, a four-set Waves victory in Romeoville. The teams have only met twice previously in Firestone Fieldhouse, a season-opening two-match series in 2012 that was split. Lewis made it to the semifinals of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
LAST WEEK — The Waves suffered their first loss of the season to UC Santa Barbara in five sets on Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse. After committing just 17 attack errors in the first three matches of the season, the Waves had 30 against the Gauchos, and also hurt themselves with 29 service errors. Pepperdine was outhit .238 to .201. Spencer Wickens had a match-high 17 kills.
IN-SEASON HONORS — Bryce Dvorak and Austin Wilmot swept the MPSF Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, on January 17 after two wins against Erskine.
PRESEASON HONORS — Off the Block recognized five of the Waves with preseason acclaim. Four were named preseason All-Americans (Pepperdine had more than any other school), with Austin Wilmot on the first team, and Trey Cole, Bryce Dvorak and Spencer Wickens on the second team. Additionally, Jaylen Jasper was named the nation's top transfer.
MILESTONES — Jaylen Jasper is approaching 1,000 career kills (the first 917 came at Stanford, he's now at 948).
MPSF — The Waves were picked as the MPSF favorite in a preseason vote of the league's coaches. Pepperdine received five of the seven first-place votes. The Waves were followed by UCLA, BYU, Grand Canyon, USC, Stanford and Concordia.
RANKINGS — Pepperdine opened the 2022 season at #3 in the AVCA rankings. It was the best preseason ranking for the Waves since the 2015 season.
ROSTER NUMBERS — The Waves return the bulk of their lineup and only lost one starter (Noah Dyer) from last season's team. Ten of the 12 players who saw action last season are back, and Pepperdine brings back 86.7% of last year's kill totals. The 2022 roster consists of four graduate students, four seniors, two juniors, six sophomores, five redshirt freshmen and seven true freshmen. The 28-man roster is the largest in Pepperdine history and is believed to be the most in Division I-II this season. Alex Gettinger, Spencer Wickens and Austin Wilmot are utilizing a COVID-19 redshirt year to play a fifth season.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
