PROVO, Utah — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team gave 9th-ranked BYU a run for their money in George Albert Smith Fieldhouse on Tuesday night, but eventually fell 3-1 in a well-played bout. The Waves (9-6, 1-1 WCC) dropped 25-17 in the first to BYU (14-1, 3-0 WCC), but rallied for a 25-18 second set win to tie the match up. The Cougars closed the match down with a pair of 25-21 set wins.
Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS)) had a sold all-around match with 19 kills on a .381 success rate, along with 13 digs, six blocks and an ace. Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and Alli O'Harra (Boise, Idaho/Centennial HS) also hit for double-figure kills with 13 and 10 respectively and Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) marked her 10th-career double-double with a career-best 45 assists and 14 digs.

Pepperdine posted 59 kills with only 24 errors on 154 swings for a .227 success rate, while the opposition was good for 56 kills and 18 errors on a 158 attempts for .241 attempts. The Waves led the match with 56 assists, four aces and 72 digs, while the Cougars were good for two aces, 54 assists and 60 digs. BYU was solid at the net for 17.0 blocks, while the Waves posted 9.0 team blocks on the might.

BYU jumped out to a four-point lead at the 7-3 mark and maintained the advantage throughout the set. Despite a 20-12 lead late in the match, the Waves worked back to close the gap to within five at the 17-22 mark, but were unable to overcome the Cougars as the home team amassed a 25-17 first set win.
In the second set, the Waves pulled ahead early with a quick 3-1 advantage fueled by O'Harra and Frohling kills and followed up with a Dyer ace. It was a lead Pepperdine would maintain as the Waves buckled down and out-attacked the Cougars .167 to .020 in the set, allowing only eight kills throughout. The opposition closed the set to a two-point deficit at the 15-13 mark, but Pepperdine worked with the momentum and big block collaborations from Gross, Dyer and Gross, Frohling put the set away 25-18 for the Waves.
With the match evened 1-1, the Waves worked with the momentum off the break to go ahead 5-2 early. The opposition was close behind and took their own lead to a 14-11 advantage. The Waves continued to play hard, though, and tied the set at 18-18 with back-to-back blocks from Gross, Frohling and Gross, Harris. The Cougars had the drive at the end though and pulled ahead 2-1 with a 25-21 set win.
The opposition pulled ahead to a 10-5 lead, but the Waves were close behind and with back-to-back kills from Frohling and Lyons and a block connection from Gross and Frohling, Pepperdine tied the match at 14's. Late in the set, Harris helped the team close the gap to two, 20-22, but the Cougars had the momentum and used it to secure a 25-21 set win and 3-1 match victory.
