It all came down to the fifth set for the second-consecutive match. After falling behind 5-1 early on, the Waves started to make a comeback attempt, but Pepperdine was unable to overcome the gap and fell 15-9 for a 3-2 final result.

The match opened as close as can be with tied scores including 11-11, 15-15 and 19-19 in the first set. The Waves had the early advantage, but the Pilots rallied late and went on a 6-2 run for the 25-21 set win and 1-0 lead on the day.

In the second set, the Waves worked ahead 9-6 early with the help of an ace by Farr and kills from Frohling and Harris. The opposition tied things up at the 14-14 mark and the two teams continued on ththat route until the Pilots pulled ahead for their first set-point opportunity at 24-21. With kills from Harris and Lyons and an ace from Gross, Pepperdine tied the match at 24's. The Waves fought off five other set-point chances and worked through three of their own before securing the 35-33 win on a Lyons' kill. The team's 35-points are the 2nd-most points scored in a single set by the Waves during the rally scoring era, with the first being 36 in 2009.

Pepperdine dominated the third set, building an early 8-2 lead on smashes from Gross and Frohling and blocks from Gross, Nielsen and Harris. The Waves continued to roll en route to a 17-7 lead late in the set and eventually led by 10 at set-point. A smash from Lyons and errors from across the net sealed the deal en route to a 25-15 set win and 2-1 advantage for the Waves.

The Waves pulled ahead early in the fourth, looking at a 9-5 lead fueled by kills from Nielsen and Lyons. The opposition tied the match at 13's, however, and then worked for the 25-22 set win to tie the match 2-2 and send it to a fifth.
