Waves Honor Seniors in Final Home Game of Season

MALIBU - The Pepperdine men's basketball team celebrated its seniors Saturday night but couldn't get the win, falling 90-83 to Washington State in the Waves' final regular-season contest.

Prior to the game, seniors Alonso Faure, Alex Leiba, Stefan Todorovic and Boubacar Coulibaly were honored in a senior ceremony.

BIG WAVES
  • Zion Bethea (South Orange, N.J./Delaware) scored a team-high 22 points while pulling down three boards and snatching two steals.
  • Dovydas Butka (Panevezys, Lithuania) had 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
  • Moe Odum (Bronx, N.Y./Pacific) contributed another double-double with 14 points and 11 assists.
  • Boubacar Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/USC) also had 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

KEY STATS
  • Washington State outshot the Waves 47-42% from the field and 46-41% from beyond the arc.
  • Pepperdine narrowly edged the Cougs on the boards, pulling down 43 to WSU's 42.

RECAP
The Waves opened the game with a Dovydas Butka dunk by the way of Boubacar Coulibaly but Washington State began its three-point barrage early on. The teams traded buckets until around the 11-minute mark when the Cougars opened up a 15-2 run to go ahead by 14 and Pepperdine attempted to claw out of the deficit but WSU's 47.1% from beyond the arc sent the Waves into the break at a 48-34 score.

Pepperdine began the second period on a quick 8-0 run and Wazzu's three-point accuracy held steady. The Waves got back within six of the Cougs on a Butka corner three, but WSU used another long-range shot of their own and capitalized on a fastbreak dunk to give the energy back to the visiting bench. Both teams entered the bonus early and the last seven minutes were full of free throws. Washington State was able to stiff-arm Pepperdine at a 90-83 final score.
