MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team will get to enjoy the comforts of home for one last game against UNLV on Friday evening before embarking to Las Vegas for the Ball Dawgs Classic next week.
GAME #5: Pepperdine vs UNLV | Firestone Fieldhouse | Malibu, Calif. | ESPN+ | 7 p.m.
PROMOS – Fans are encouraged to wear as much orange as humanly possible on Friday night for an "Orange Out." The game will also serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, complete with a tailgate and tacos before the game. To RSVP, click here.
TICKETS - Home game tickets may be purchased online at PepperdineWaves.com/Tickets. Visit the site to purchase tickets in advance and/or read spectator guidelines, including the Firestone clear bag policy. Pepperdine faculty, staff and students may show Pepperdine ID for entry -- no ticket purchase is required. Doors open an hour before game time.
LAST TIME OUT - During the team's last outing, the Waves saw five players accrue double-figure scoring and three more gather seven or more rebounds in a start-to-finish 88-53 domination of LIU on Monday evening. Houston Mallette led the Waves with 24 points on 4-of-6 shooting from long range while freshman Nils Cooper finished with a career-high 13 points.
CONFERENCE CALL - Junior Houston Mallette and sophomore Jevon Porter were named to the West Coast Conference Preseason squad, announced in early October. The last time Pepperdine put two names on the preseason team was the 2020-21 season, in which the Waves' all-time leading scorer Colbey Ross and Kessler Edwards achieved the feat. The honor is also the second-straight such award for Mallette after he became the lone Wave on the preseason team last year.
HOUSTON, WE HAVE A… – Junior guard Houston Mallette is on track to hit the 1,000-point mark this season, as he currently sits at 890 career points. For those following along at home, Mallette (should he keep his scoring record on the same pace as his last two outputs) will hit the milestone midway through the season. Mallette leads the Waves in scoring with 19.5 points per contest, contributing double-figures in that category in each of the four games this season while going for 52.6% from long range.
AJAYI ON THE DOUBLE – Junior forward Michael Ajayi accrued back-to-back double-doubles last week at UC Davis and against Lafayette College. He contributed 18 points and 14 boards in the game against the Aggies and then poured in 27 points and 11 rebounds against the Leopards, shooting a spotless 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.
ON THE REBELS
Now in his third season at the helm of the Rebels, Kevin Krueger has gathered 10 transfer players- two by way of junior colleges and eight from fellow Division I institutions. UNLV fell to Southern to open their season at home in a shocking 85-71 loss that saw the opposing team shoot 61.1% from beyond the arc. The Rebels then turned around and defeated the likes of Stetson 71-55 in their most recent contest, where UNLV held its opponent to a measly 22.6% from long range.
As a team, the Rebels currently accrue a three-point average of 31.7, whereas Pepperdine delivers a 39.1% mark in that category. Both teams average about the same amount of boards, however, with the Rebels pulling down 38 and Pepperdine grabbing 39 per contest.
Ole Miss transfer guard Luis Rodriguez has led UNLV through the past two games in scoring with an average of 15 points per contest on 11-of-26 field goal and 5-of-16 three-point shooting. Rodriguez also averages seven rebounds but is second on the roster in that category following Oklahoma transfer Jalen Hill with 9.5.
UP NEXT
The Waves will take a Thanksgiving trip to Las Vegas (Henderson, specifically) for the inaugural Ball Dawgs Classic with games set for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
