OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 69-40 all-time against USC and has won five in a row (all by three-set sweeps). The Waves have won four straight at home dating back to the 2019 season. Pepperdine won at the Galen Center last year.
LAST WEEK — The Waves opened up MPSF play at then-#10 Grand Canyon and split a pair of four-set matches. Spencer Wickens had 20 kills and Jaylen Jasper had 19 in the win on Friday. The Waves dropped the first set, 42-40, the program's longest since the NCAA changed to 25-point sets in 2011. But Pepperdine came back to win the next three. Two days later, GCU won the first two sets, the Waves took the third, but the Lopes earned the split with the fourth-set victory. Jacob Steele had 14 kills in that one.
NATIONAL STATS — The Waves are in the top 10 in the nation in aces (1.89, third), kills (12.92, third), blocks (2.76, third) and hitting (.327, seventh) ... Austin Wilmot is fifth in blocks (1.29) ... Bryce Dvorak is fourth in aces (0.61) and fifth in assists (10.50) ... Jacob Steele is 10th in hitting (.398).
IN-SEASON HONORS — Trey Cole was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week on February 21 after averaging 2.00 digs in two matches at Grand Canyon ... Jaylen Jasper was named MPSF Offensive Player of the Week on February 14 after averaging 4.86 kills and 6.00 points while hitting .563 in two matches against UC Irvine ... Bryce Dvorak (9.33 assists/set, .488 team hitting) and Austin Wilmot (1.60 blocks/set) swept the MPSF Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, on January 17 after two wins against Erskine.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
