Azusa, Calif. — Karl Winter ran the nation's 18th-fastest 1,500-meter time,
Brandon Davis broke his own school record in the 400-meters and
Kyle McCabe broke the 10K record in the Pepperdine track team's memorable finish to Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday.
Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) placed third with a 3:40.58, which is the equivalent of running a sub-four-minute mile. No Wave has broken the sub-four barrier. It is also five seconds faster than the school record he set last week at Azusa Pacific's Franson Classic.
Racing in the fastest heat of the night, Winter and the pack took the first 400-meters out at around 57 seconds. While the front pack threatened to break away at the 800-meter mark, Winter surged back, latching onto the heels of the leaders at the bell lap. In the final 300, Winter found yet another gear, crossing the line in third-place behind only Academy of Art's James Young — the reigning D2 indoor mile champion — and an unattached professional.
Later in the night, McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS) used an incredibly tactical, consistent race to take down the program's 10K record. Starting from the back of the pack in the fast heat, McCabe, Winter and Justin Touhey (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Preparatory HS) picked off runners one-by-one in the first half of the race.
After McCabe's pacers dropped out, McCabe rattled off a slew of 73-second laps. The junior ran a 24:25 8K split — a new personal best — en route to working his way up to the top 10. He out-kicked several runners in his last lap, finishing in ninth with a 30:24.23.
Earlier in the day, Davis (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) broke his own school record while running in the outside lanes of the 400-meter dash. The senior, who made the finals of the 400-meter open race with a school-record-setting 50.21 on Friday, reset the record with a 50-flat. On the season, Davis has shaved 79-hundredths of a second off of his previous collegiate best.
