PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first set went point-for-point through an 8-8 tied score before the opposition collected a 12-9 advantage.  The Waves were quick to counter, however, and eventually took a 17-14 lead with multiple kills from Rachel Ahrens and Meg Brown. After exchanging a few points, the Toreros tied things up at 22's and took a 23-22 lead after finding the floor off the attack. A kill from Shannon Scully tied the score and put Ahrens at the service line though, and it was an advantage the Waves would be sure to utilize. Ahrens quickly placed a pair of aces on the floor to take the set 25-23 and put her team ahead 1-0.
Â
Pepperdine and San Diego came out going point-for-point once again in the second set, though the Toreros pulled away earlier for a 12-9 lead. A kill from Brown in the middle, followed by a Brown, Isabel Zelaya block collaboration pushed the Waves closer, but the home squad put a few more points on the board for a 15-11 lead to force a Pepperdine timeout. Though the Waves put a few more points on the board, the squad was unable to overcome the deficit and USD came away with a 25-18 win to even the overall.
Â
The Toreros came out of the break and continued with the momentum from the previous set, amassing a 12-6 lead early on. It was a lead Pepperdine would be unable to overcome and with a strong Toreros attacking presence, the Waves were downed 25-15 in the set.
Â
USD came out to an 8-2 lead to open the fourth set. Though the Waves were able to place a few attacks to counter to a four-point deficit at the 16-12 mark late in the set, the Toreros had the energy and finished the match off with a 25-17 final set win.
