Waves Begin Outdoor Track Season At UCSB

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams open the outdoor season this weekend at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Roundup in Santa Barbara.
MEET DETAILS
The race will be hosted by UC Santa Barbara at the Pauley Track in Santa Barbara, California on Saturday (Feb. 22) and will feature UC Santa Barbara, Westmont and Pepperdine. Field competition will begin at 10 a.m. with track events starting at 12 p.m.
WOMEN'S ROSTER
During the 2020 indoor season, the women set multiple school records. The first school record to fall was from freshman Skyler Danley (Easton Area HS/Easton, Pa.) in the 5,000-meter race, posting a time of 18:29.70 at Nike Indoor Invite in Boise. Danley set another record at the Boise State Challenge the next weekend, in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:39.88.

The final record fell when the team of Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS), Abbey Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS), Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) and Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) set the distance medley relay record at a time of 12:33.27.

Meck was one of the Waves' top runners last year, posting the best outdoor performance in the mile, setting school record at 5:09.74. She was also the top outdoor runner for the Waves in the 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000. She is currently sitting at #2 on the all-time performance list for the 800, #5 in the 1,500 and #3 in the 5,000.

Another key returner is junior Caila Tongco (Kent-Meridian HS/Kent, Wash.), who also set a school record last season in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles at 14.43 and was the leader for the Waves in the outdoor 100 and 200 meter races.

Persinger was second on the team last season in the outdoor 800 and 1,500 and senior Katie O'Malley (Dougherty Valley HS/San Ramon, Calif.) was second in the outdoor 400 meters, both athletes will be key contributors this season.

MEN'S ROSTER

Junior Brandon Davis (Troy HS/Troy, Mich.) was one of the top athletes last season, setting multiple school records. The first individual record he set was in the 400 meter run at the 2019 Beach Invitational with a time of 50.79. Also, at the Beach Invitational, Davis set the 400-meter hurdles at 59.66. Finally, Davis was part of the record-retting 4x400 meter relay, joined by Connor Shahadi, Kieran Halewyn and Treet Allison.

Another key runner last season who is expected to perform well this season is sophomore Jackson Felkins (Carroll Senior HS/Southlake, Texas). As a freshman, Felkins set the 10,000 meter record with a time of 30:51.48 at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival. Felkins was also the top performer for the Waves in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters

Sophomore Karl Winter (Saint Mary's HS/Stockton, Calif.) was also a key runner for the Waves last season, as the top performer in the mile, running a 4:19.76 at the UCSB Gaucho Roundup.

Head coach Sylvia Mosqueda says: "I'm excited to start the outdoor season, having the ladies off to a strong start with the indoor season and the men joining us. I'm looking forward to some new personal records that are about to happen in the men's 3000 meters. On the women's side, I'm really excited about Tiffany, Caila and Alexa Ortega, as well as all the other young ladies are going to have an amazing outdoor meet as well. All of the athletes have all been working really hard and they will make some waves at UCSB."
