Waves Set Records In Outdoor Track Opener

SANTA BARBARA, California – Karl Winter set a school record and won the 3,000m, while Cori Persinger also set a school record, as the Pepperdine track teams opened their outdoor season at the annual UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Roundup against UCSB and Westmont on Saturday.

Sophomore Karl Winter (Saint Mary's HS/Stockton, Calif.) had an excellent showing in the 3,000 meter run, winning the race in a time of 8:25.18. His time beat the previous record by 6 seconds, over previous teammate Nick Heath, who set the record in 2016 with a time of 8:31.23. Right behind Winter was sophomore Jackson Felkins (Carroll Senior HS/Southlake, Texas) who took 2nd, while also going under the previous record at 8:28.95.

The second school record fell in the women's mile, as senior Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) ran a 5:09.08, to edge out the previous record of 5:09.74, which was set by teammate Abbey Meck last season.

Junior Caila Tongco (Kent-Meridian HS/Kent, Wash.), posted two wins for the Waves in both the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.97 and the 200 meter dash with a 26.60. There were a number of other strong performances from the women, including Skyler Danley (Easton Area HS/Easton, Pa.) who was the leader for the Waves in the 3,000 meters, taking 5th place and setting a personal record at 10:27.18.

Senior Katie O'Malley (Dougherty Valley HS/San Ramon, Calif.) took 7th in the 100 meter dash, Sophomore Keeley Maloney (Greensburg Central Catholic HS/Fayette City, PA.) took 4th in the high jump, Riley Wright (Corona Del Sol HS/Chandler, Ariz.) placed 9th in the 800, and Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) was 5th in the 400 meter hurdles.

For the men's team opening their 2020 season, junior Brandon Davis (Troy HS/Troy, Mich.) placed 5th in the 800 meters and freshman Jaad Abduljawad (Cal Coast Academy/Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) was 5th in the 200 meter dash
Next, the Waves will head to the Long Beach Opener Invite in Long Beach, California on Saturday, March 7th.
