More Records Fall For Waves In Beach Opener

LONG BEACH, California – Karl Winter had another outstanding performance for the Waves, setting a school and stadium record to win the 1500m, as the Pepperdine track teams competed in the Long Beach State Opener on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Karl Winter (Saint Mary's HS/Stockton, Calif.) had an excellent showing in the 1,500 run, winning in a time of 3:53.53. He not only set a new school record by nearly two seconds, but also broke the stadium record at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach. Winter had another solid performance in the 800m run, earning another personal record and taking 7th overall with a time of 1:55.94.

Senior Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) also had a great 1,500m for the women with a new personal record of 4:50.23, which earned her 11th place overall.

Sophomore Keeley Maloney (Greensburg Central Catholic HS/Fayette City, PA.) was the top performer for the Waves in both the 100m and 200m, posting times of 13:33 and 27.23 respectively.

Other top performers for the women including Justice Jackson in the 400m, Skyler Danley (Easton Area HS/Easton, Pa.) in the 3,000m, Caila Tongco (Kent-Meridian HS/Kent, Wash.) in the 100 meter hurdles and Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) in the 400 meter hurdles.

Jaad Abduljawad (Cal Coast Academy/Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) was the top performer for the Waves in the 200 meter dash, with a time of 23.00. Junior Brandon Davis (Troy HS/Troy, Mich.) took top-16 in the 200 meter dash, as the top performer for Pepperdine. Jackson Felkins (Carroll Senior HS/Southlake, Texas) also had a great performance on the day in the 3,000 meters taking 6th with a time of 8:34.63.

Head Coach Sylvia Mosqueda said: "Today was a great day for the Pepperdine men and women's team sprint and distance teams. Cori Persinger had a new 1500 personal record. On the men's side, Karl winter had an amazing double win, first in the 1500m at 3.53.53, which was a new school and stadium record. Then he came back in the 800m to win with a 1:55.6. It was a fantastic day at Long Beach for the Waves!"
Next, the Waves will compete in the Occidental Distance Carnival on Saturday, March 14th.
