Waves To Compete In Beach Opener

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams are set to compete in the Long Beach State Opener this weekend.
MEET DETAILS
The race will be hosted by Long Beach State at the Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, California on Saturday (March 7). The competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

WOMEN'S ROSTER
During the 2020 outdoor season opener, the Waves set a new school record and took home multiple wins. Senior Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) set a new school record in the women's outdoor mile at 5:09.08, just seven tenths of a second faster than the previous record of 5:09.74.

Junior Caila Tongco (Kent-Meridian HS/Kent, Wash.), posted both of the Waves' wins in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.97 and the 200 meter dash with a 26.60. Skyler Danley (Easton Area HS/Easton, Pa.) also had a strong performance as the leader for the Waves in the 3,000 meters, taking fifth place and setting a personal record at 10:27.18.

The men's outdoor track opener was highlighted by sophomore Karl Winter (Saint Mary's HS/Stockton, Calif.) who had an excellent showing in the 3,000 meter run, winning the race in a time of 8:25.18 and setting a new school record. Sophomore Jackson Felkins (Carroll Senior HS/Southlake, Texas) who took second in the 3,000, also ran under the previous record at 8:28.95. Junior Justin Touhey (Don Bosco Preparatory HS/Stony Point N.Y.) also added himself to the all-time performance list in the 3,000 at #5 with a 8:35.49.

Junior Brandon Davis (Troy HS/Troy, Mich.) had a solid showing in the 800 meters placing fifth and freshman Jaad Abduljawad (Cal Coast Academy/Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) was fifth in the 200 meter dash.

Head coach Sylvia Mosqueda says: "The Long Beach Opener is going to be a great meet for the Pepperdine athletes. Coach Yannick is doing a great job preparing our sprint ladies for some great racing. I'm also hoping for some new stadium records from the men in the distance events. The workouts our men and women have had were stellar, so I'm excited to see what we do. I'm really proud of them, they always give me 100%."
