WAVEPOINTS
• With this week's previously scheduled home games against San Jose State and Fresno State canceled by the opponents, the Pepperdine men's basketball team worked quickly to find two replacements. The Waves will host Saint Katherine on Thursday before traveling to San Diego State on Sunday.
• This will be the first-ever meeting between the Waves and Firebirds, an NAIA program from San Marcos, California.
• It will be the first meeting between the Waves and Aztecs since the 1994-95 season (but the third time in 12 days that Pepperdine will play in Viejas Arena).
• The Waves began the season last week at SDSU's multi-team event and posted two impressive efforts with a 16-point win over last season's Big West champions, UC Irvine, and a triple-overtime loss to #22 UCLA.
• Colbey Ross earned another big accolade this week when he was named to the Wooden Award watch list for National Player of the Year. He's also been named to the Naismith and Cousy preseason watch lists.
• Ross is now Pepperdine's all-time leader in both points and assists after his 33-point effort against UCLA last week. He also set Pepperdine's career record for free throws made in that game, which was his 100th career start.
• The Waves are averaging 92.0 points per game after two contests and five Waves are averaging in double-figures — Ross 23.0, Kessler Edwards 18.5, Jan Zidek 13.0, Jade' Smith 12.5, Kene Chukwuka 10.0.
• Ross and Edwards were named to the preseason All-WCC team (Pepperdine and Gonzaga were the only schools to put multiple players on the 10-man list).
• Lorenzo Romar is in his third season this time around at Pepperdine, his sixth season in all with the Waves over two stints, and his 24th season as a head coach.
• The Waves feature an experienced squad, with seven of the top nine scorers from last season back. A total of 11 players had previously seen action for Pepperdine.
• The Waves were picked to finish fourth in the WCC preseason coaches' poll.
WAVECASTS — The Saint Katherine game can be seen online via WaveCasts on the WCC Network. Veteran play-by-play man Al Epstein, a 2015 Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame inductee who is now in his 36th season, will be behind the microphone. This will be his 1,072nd consecutive men's basketball broadcast for the Waves.
ATTENDANCE — Per the current COVID-19 guidelines set by the state of California and Los Angeles County, fans will not be permitted to attend home games.
PEPPERDINE — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
