Men's Hoops Posts Big Comeback Win vs. PSU

MALIBU, California – Colbey Ross and Kameron Edwards led a ferocious comeback as the Pepperdine men's basketball team prevailed over Portland State, 77-71, on Tuesday night.
 
The Waves (6-6) trailed 67-60 with less than six minutes left but outscored the Vikings (5-6) 17-4 the rest of the way.
 
Ross (31 points) and Edwards (20) scored 51 of the short-handed Waves' 77 points, and they had 21 of the Waves' 23 points over the final 11 minutes.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) scored more than 30 points for the second time this season and the third time in his career. Twenty-two of his 31 points came after halftime. He also had five assists and three steals and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) became Pepperdine's 43rd player to reach the 1,000-point milestone on a dunk late in the game. He hit the 20-point mark for a team-best sixth time this season. He also had a season-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
  • Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) finished one rebound shy of a fourth consecutive double-double, as he had 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
  • Sophomore guard Darryl Polk Jr. (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) contributed three points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists along with a game-best +13 plus-minus.
  • Freshman guard Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS) made his first career start and had six points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • The only substitute to play any minutes of note, sophomore center Victor Ohia Obioha (Owerri, Nigeria/Hillcrest HS) grabbed a season-high seven rebounds.
KEY STATS 
  • After shooting 30.6% in the first half, the Waves were at 54.8% in the second, good for 41.8% overall.
  • The Vikings went from 46.4% in the first to 31.3% in the second for 38.3% overall.
  • Turnovers were fairly even (14 by the Waves, 16 by the Vikings) but Pepperdine had a 20-9 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Portland State shot better from outside (12-for-26 on threes to Pepperdine's 5-for-16) but the Waves enjoyed a 44-18 edge in points in the paint.
  • The Vikings were led by Holland Woods' 23 points.
PLAY BY PLAY
 
The Waves never led in the first half. Portland State took its biggest lead of 10 points at 33-23 with six minutes left, and it was 38-32 at halftime.
 
A Ross lay-up capped off an 8-0 run early in the second half, giving Pepperdine its first lead at 43-41.
 
Tied at 54 with 11 1/2 minutes left, Portland State went back up by three on a Woods three-pointer, and the Vikings would build the lead back up to seven at 66-59 with a little less than eight minutes to play, and again at seven at 67-60 with under six minutes to go.
 
Ross made four consecutive free throws, and then Kameron Edwards fed brother Kessler for a slam dunk, cutting the deficit to one at 67-66 with 4 1/2 minutes to go. After a Portland State free throw, the Waves took the lead on a Ross three-pointer, which made it 69-68 with 3:10 left. Ross served up Kameron Edwards for a slam dunk with 1:51 to go, and Ross scored again with 1:13 left to push the lead to 73-68.
 
The Vikings were in a stretch in which they had missed 10 consecutive field goals, but that ended on a Woods three-pointer with 41 seconds left, cutting Pepperdine's lead to 73-71. With the shot clock winding down, Ross hit a tough jumper in the paint with 12 seconds remaining to again make it a two-possession game. After a PSU miss, Kameron Edwards iced the victory with two free throws with four seconds left.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Four of the Waves' backcourt players were sidelined tonight, and only eight players saw action. Each of the starters played at least 33 minutes. Andre Ball (knee), Skylar Chavez (illness), Keith Smith (knee) and Jade' Smith (knee) were all unavailable.
  • Pepperdine took the all-time series lead at 4-3 and ended the Vikings' three-game win streak in the series.
  • The Waves improved to 4-1 in home games this season.
