WAVEPOINTS
• The Pepperdine men's basketball team has its home opener on Saturday against a UC Irvine team that is coming off its best season in program history, including a win in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
• The Waves, who have won eight consecutive home openers, are looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss at California on Tuesday night.
• Colbey Ross continued his All-WCC-level play by matching his season averages of a year ago — 19 points and seven assists — in the opener.
• Ross continues his march toward the program's all-time assist record — he's #5 at 425, Amadi Udenyi is #4 at 426 and Jeremy Major's record is 494.
• Ross made the All-WCC first team last year, while Kameron Edwards (All-WCC honorable mention) and Kessler Edwards (WCC All-Freshman team) were also postseason honorees.
• Ross was named to the Lou Henson Award preseason watch list (for the nation's top mid-major player) on Wednesday.
• Kessler Edwards, who took part in a USA Basketball U19 national team camp this summer and joined Ross on the preseason All-WCC team, scored 18 points at Cal.
• The Waves return 10 letterwinners and four of their top five scorers from last season.
• Returning players provided 75% of last year's scoring, 81% of the rebounding and 85% of the assists.
• Last year's Waves won 10 more games than the year before — one of just four times in school history Pepperdine has improved by double-digits in the win column. Lorenzo Romar has been the head coach for two of them.
• The Waves were picked to finish fourth in the WCC in the preseason coaches poll after placing eighth last season.
• Pepperdine's next game is at CSUN on Tuesday, the first of three straight road games.
WAVECASTS — Saturday's game can be watched online via WaveCasts on the WCC Network. Veteran play-by-play man Al Epstein, a 2015 Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, will be behind the microphone (now in his 35th season, this will be his 1,039th consecutive broadcast for the Waves).
TICKETS — Single-game tickets for most Pepperdine home games are $25 for reserved seating, $15 for adult general admission and $12 for alumni or child general admission. Select premium games are $30, $20 and $15, respectively. Tickets are available via PepperdineWaves.com or by calling (310) 506-4764.
PROMOTIONS — Fans are encouraged to wear blue on Saturday ... A tailgate for Pepperdine students will be held outside Firestone Fieldhouse beginning at 3 p.m., with free food and prizes ... Free t-shirts will be given away at the game ... Hyundai will have a ride-and-drive promotion as part of the ongoing #FillItForward campaign.
PEPPERDINE — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). The Waves have produced 205 conference championships, 318 All-Americans and 53 Olympians. Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #50 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
