Women's Soccer Begins WCC Play at Home Saturday

MALIBU, California — West Coast Conference play gets started this weekend when the Pepperdine women's soccer team hosts Portland.
The Waves played one of the nation's toughest non-conference schedules to get themselves prepared for the WCC season and they'll look to get off to a positive start at home on Saturday. Despite a .500 record, Pepperdine is receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll.
MATCH #11 — Saturday (October 5) at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, California: Pepperdine (4-4-2, 0-0-0) vs. Portland (4-2-2, 0-0-0) at 1 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — The match will be streamed online via the WCC Network with Pepperdine Hall of Famer Al Epstein on the call. Links to the broadcast and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 7-16-2 all-time against Portland but is unbeaten in the last five meetings (4-0-1) with five consecutive shutouts. The Waves won 4-0 the last time the teams met in Malibu in 2017, and were victorious 2-0 at Portland last year. The Pilots are coming off a 2-0 win at then-#21 California. Portland has both scored 11 goals and allowed 11 goals this season.
LAST WEEK — The Waves closed out non-conference play with a 1-0 victory at CSUN last Thursday. Devyn Gilfoy scored her first goal of the season in the ninth minute, the Waves outshot the Matadors 14-6 and the defense posted its fifth shutout of the season. CSUN was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll last week.
NOTABLE — The Waves are unbeaten in their last 10 WCC openers (7-0-3) ... Four different Waves — Shelby Little, Leyla McFarland, Hailey Stenberg and Brie Welch — are tied with a team-high two goals ... McFarland leads with four assists and eight points ... Kinsey Ehmann is tied for third in the WCC in saves per game (4.0) ... The Waves' defense has been excellent, ranking tied for second in the WCC in shutouts (five) and third in goals-against average (0.96). At the other end of the field, they're seventh in scoring at 1.30 goals per game ... Pepperdine played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. The combined win-loss record of their non-conference opponents in 2018 was 120-62-20 (.643), and five of them won matches in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Five of the 10 opponents were nationally ranked at the time of the game, and another was receiving votes.
TICKETS — Single-game tickets at Tari Frahm Rokus Field cost $10 each for adults and $8 each for children under 12, seniors 65+ and alumni/Crest members. Students, faculty and staff are free with an ID. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $5 each.
