Women’s Soccer Captures 3-1 Win Over Colgate to Open 2026 Season

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (1-0-0) beat Colgate (0-1-0) 3-1 to open up the athletic year for the Waves Thursday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
"Very proud of the first performance and it's great to get out of the gate with a W," head coach Tim Ward said. "Onto the next."
Outshooting the Raiders 14-4, the Waves held position for the majority of the match, putting up eight shots on goal compared to the opponent's two. After settling into the rhythm of the game, Julia Quinonez struck for Pepperdine before Colgate could rattle a shot off. Assisted by Victoria Alessandrini for the first collegiate point, Quinonez threaded the ball underneath the goalie's right-hand side in the 31st minute to give the Waves a 1-0 lead going into the half.
Consistently knocking on the door for another goal, Quinonez secured her first brace of the season in the 73rd minute. Fellow senior Kyra Murphy fed her the ball this time as the Torrance, Calif. native hit the upper lefthand side of the net, leaving the goalie no chance at a save to double the Waves' lead 2-0.
With five freshmen making their collegiate debut, Kate Ryan wasted no time to notch her first collegiate goal. Emjae Soriano passed a ball just outside the right-hand side of the goalie box for Ryan to hit a perfectly placed ball that tapped the crossbar before dropping into the net. Ryan is the first freshman to score in the season-opening match since Tatum Wynalda in 2022.
Notching one save, Jillian Medvecky played the entire match. With 14 shots, eight of them being on goal, Quinonez led the way with five shots and an .800 on goal percentage in 64 minutes.
Along with Ryan and Soriano, Sam Hosford, Erin Ha, Fiona McCormick, Sahaana Potti, and Kaitlin Lowry made their debut for the Waves this afternoon.
Next up, the Waves are staying home, welcoming cross-town opponent USC, who received votes in the preseason top 15 poll, to Malibu Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with a camper reunion taking place for the fans and all Malibu Soccer Academy members.
