MALIBU, Calif. — It's a big week for the Pepperdine women's volleyball team, as the Waves host #1 BYU on Tuesday before hitting the road for another pair of West Coast Conference road matches on Thursday and Saturday at San Francisco and Santa Clara. The match against BYU in Firestone Fieldhouse will air live on ESPNU.

SPLASH ZONE — Pepperdine is introducing a new student fan-experience for all home volleyball matches with the Splash Zone. The zone will be located behind the service line in between the lobby and court. All Pepperdine students are able to stand-in and support the Waves' teams in a rowdy new experience. Anyone in the Splash Zone will also be first-eligible for that events giveaway.

TOOL TIME FOR HANNAH — After propelling the Waves to a pair of road wins to open WCC action last week, junior outside hitter
Hannah Frohling garnered the Waves' first West Coast Conference weekly honor of the season. She led the Waves to a 3-0 win over Portland, a team that was previously undefeated at 12-0 before the match, and then continued to help the Waves to a four-set win at Gonzaga to close the weekend. In seven sets played, she posted 4.79 points/set with 3.71 kills/set, 0.71 aces/set, 1.43 digs/set and 0.71 blocks/set for the Waves. Overall, she put down 26 kills on a .393 success rate, along with five aces, 10 digs and five blocks for 33.5 points.
In the sweep at Portland, she hit for double-figure kills with 13 smashes. With only two errors on 28 swings, she hit for a .393 output. The outside hitter also posted two aces and four digs for 15.0 points. Then in the 3-1 win at Gonzaga, she completely paralleled her attack effort with 13 kills and only two misses on 28 swings for a .393 hitting percentage. In this match, however, she added five blocks, six digs, three aces and an assist. She only had three service errors on 31 attempts for a .903 service percentage and on the back link she totaled only one errors with 25 reception attempts for a .960 success rate.
SQUAD GOALS — After going undefeated in the opening week of West Coast Conference action, the Waves are tied atop the standings with top-ranked BYU. Pepperdine has gone 8-4 after five weeks of play. As a team, Pepperdine produces 13.98 kills/set on a .265 success rate along with 13.20 assists/set, 1.66 aces/set, 14.61 digs/set and 1.98 bocks/set. The Waves have allowed opponents 11.10 kills/set on a .175 output, along with 10.66 assists/set, 1.05 aces/set, 13.68 digs/set and 2.15 blocks/set.
As a team, the Waves rank in the top-26 of three statistical categories: 23rd with 13.20 assists/set, 25th with 13.98 kills/set and 26th with a 0.265 hitting percentage.
Blossom Sato ranks 25th nationally after averaging 11.05 assists/set in 12 matches.
CANNONS — Hannah Frohling, Shannon Scully and
Rachel Ahrens lead the Waves with 3.26, 3.20 and 2.97 kills/set averages respectively. All three have totaled over 100-kills so far this season. Frohling has amassed 124 kills with 39 errors on 317 swings for a .268 success rate. Scully has amassed 128 smashes with 48 errors on 361 attempts for a .222 hitting percentage and Ahrens has added 119 kills with 37 errors on 263 total attacks for a .312 clip. Frohling and Scully also lead the Waves with 16 aces apiece, amassing a 0.42 and 0.40 aces/set output respectively. Frohling adds 1.24 digs/set and 0.50 blocks/set, Scully produces 2.88 digs/set and 0.38 blocks/set and Ahrens adds 1.40 digs/set and 0.70 blocks/set for the Waves.
MALIBU ROOFING COMPANY — Tarah Wylie and
Alli O'Harra have been the main managers in the Malibu Roofing Company, amassing 0.98 and 0.91 blocks/set respectively. Wylie has tallied 2.15 kills/set on a .349 hitting percentage, as well as 40 blocks including three solo rejections. O'Harra has posted 1.68 kills/set on a .229 output, along with 31 blocks including two solos. Ahrens, Frohling and Scully have also reached the double-figure block mark for the season with 28, 19 and 15 blocks respectively.
Rosie Ballo has also spent time in the middle this season, amassing 0.69 blocks/set for the Waves with nine total rejections.
PLAYMAKERS — Blossom Sato is Pepperdine's primary playmaker, ranking 25th nationally with 11.05 assists/set. She has dished out 453 total assists this season thus far. She also has helped her team to 13.98 kills/set and a .265 success rate on the offensive, which both rank nationally. She has marked 0.41 kills/set and 2.20 digs/set.
CAN YOU DIG IT? — Hana Lishman has started in the libero position in all matches this season, totaling 148 digs for 3.61 digs/set. She has also added 28 assists for 0.68 assists/set and nine aces for the Waves. In her first match this season, she was solid in the back line with 26 digs, and in nine matches this season she has marked double-figure digs.
Jaiden Farr,
Madison Shields and
Julia DiBona have also entered matches for defensive support, amassing 1.10, 1.30 and 1.00 digs/set respectively
LAST WEEK, TODAY — Last week, the Waves opened West Coast Conference action by taking down Portland, a team previously undefeated, and Gonzaga on the road. Against the Pilots, Pepperdine posted 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19 set scores for the sweep. The team amassed 41 kills on a .292 success rate, along with five aces, 42 digs and 9.0 team blocks. Pepperdine allowed the opposition only 36 kills on a .124 output, with four aces, 44 digs and 5.0 blocks.
Rachel Ahrens led the squad with 14 kills on a .520 clip, along with an ace and five blocks.
Hannah Frohling also hit for double-figure kills with 13 on a .393 percentage, while adding a pair of aces and four digs.
Tarah Wylie posted a team-best seven blocks, while adding six kills on a .400 success rate.
Shannon Scully also produced six kills, with 11 digs and an ace.
Blossom Sato led the team with 33 assists and posted a double-double after adding 11 digs.
Hana Lishman provided big back row support with 11 digs, three assists and an ace as well.
In the four-set win over the Bulldogs, the Waves came back from a 25-17 first set loss to win 25-15, 25-19 and 25-18. The team marked 44 smashes on a .169 clip, with six aces, 51 digs and a season-best 17.0 blocks. Pepperdine gave up 42 kills on a .036 hitting percentage, with three aces, 56 digs and 6.0 blocks. Frohling led the squad again with a mirrored attack output from her previous match with 13 kills on a .393 clip. She added three aces, six digs and five blocks as well. Ahrens again hit for double-figures with 10 kills, six blocks and an ace.
Alli O'Harra led the team with a career-best 10 blocks and Wylie helped the effort at the net with seven blocks including one solo. Wylie also added eight kills. Scully posted eight kills, two aces, 13 digs and three blocks in an all-around effort. Sato led again with 36 assists and added eight digs, two blocks and two kills. Lishman closed up the weekend with nine digs as well.
THE COMPETITION — BYU is the only West Coast Conference school that has a winning record against Pepperdine. The Cougars lead the Waves with a 24-7 all-time, dating back to the 1976 season when the teams first faced and the Waves won 2-0. The longest Waves' winning streak came from 2000-11 where the Waves won four-straight. Currently, the Cougars have won 12-consecutive matches since 2012, including two wins last season in either four or three sets. This season, the Cougars are ranked No. 1 nationally and have gone 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the WCC play with a pair of home sweeps over Pacific and Saint Mary's last weekend.
The Waves lead
San Francisco all-time with a 59-7 overall record since the 1985 campaign. In the first match, Pepperdine won 3-1 and then the Waves continued on to 16-straight before the Dons won their first match against in a 1993 five-set brawl. The longest Waves' winning streak against USF came from 1993-2007 when Pepperdine won 29-straight including 19 by straight-set decisions. Currently, the Waves are on a seven-match winning streak with a pair of sweeps in the 2017 season. This season, the Dons also rank atop the WCC standings with top-ranked BYU and Pepperdine, after opening WCC play with a sweep over Santa Clara. USF has gone 8-4 this season.
Pepperdine leads
Santa Clara with a 40-33 overall record against since 1982 when the Waves won a 2-0 match on a neutral court. Each team has gone on small winning streaks here and there with the Waves holding the longest at seven-straight from 1985-88. Each team has collected six-straight wins at least once, with Pepperdine accomplishing this three times and Santa Clara twice. In the last two seasons, the Broncos have posted a 3-1 record against the Waves, including two wins las season with a five-set and four-set win charted. This season, the Broncos are currently 8th in the WCC standings and have gone 5-8 overall and 0-1 in the WCC with a loss to USF last week.
