MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team has a split week, hosting Hawai'i in Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday, before making the short trip to PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
The Waves will also be taking over the NCAA Instagram for the second time this season on Saturday.

PCH CUP — An annual all-sport competition between two local rivals that are separated by just 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, the PCH Cup is in its 10th season of existence. Pepperdine won the first five cups. A home win is worth one point, a road victory is worth 1.5 points. In the nine years since the cup first began, the Waves have won seven-out-of-nine years, including the Waves 2017-18 win at 11.0 points to the Lions' 8.5. This season, the Waves are ahead in the cup standings by a 3.0-0.0 point differential.
TICKETS — Each home match costs $10 for adults and $8 for alumni, children, seniors and non-Pepperdine students. Tickets are free for Pepperdine students, faculty and staff with a valid Pepperdine ID. Purchase tickets in advance at 866-WAVE-TIX or at the ticket office on game day.
SPLASH ZONE — Pepperdine is introducing a new student fan-experience for all home volleyball matches with the Splash Zone. The zone will be located behind the service line in between the lobby and court. All Pepperdine students are able to stand-in and support the Waves' teams in a rowdy new experience. Anyone in the Splash Zone will also be first-eligible for that events giveaway.
SQUAD GOALS — With a 10-4 record to open West Coast Conference play this season, the Waves have marked the best league performance since 2011. In that year, the team went 15-1 overall to win the title outright, and kicked things off with a 13-match winning streak to start.
Pepperdine is 16-8 overall this season and has also posted an 8-1 record at home. As a team, Pepperdine produces 13.62 kills/set on a .256 success rate along with 12.87 assists/set, 1.61 aces/set, 14.30 digs/set and 2.16 blocks/set. The Waves have allowed opponents 11.68 kills/set on a .188 output, along with 11.17 assists/set, 1.07 aces/set, 13.88 digs/set and 2.20 blocks/set.
As a team, the Waves rank in the top-55 of four statistical categories: 23rd with 1.61 aces/set, 29th with 0.256 hitting percentage, 44th with 12.87 assists/set and 53rd with 13.62 kills/set.
Blossom Sato, Alli O'Harra and
Hannah Frohling rank in the top-40 of one statistical category apiece with Sato ranking 30th with 10.99 assist/set, O'Harra ranking 37th with 1.29 blocks/set and Frohling ranking 48th with 0.42 aces/set so far this season. Altogether, six players rank in nine different categories this week.
CANNONS — Hannah Frohling, Rachel Ahrens and
Shannon Scully lead the Waves with 3.33, 3.29 and 3.17 kills/set averages respectively. All three have totaled over 200-kills so far this season. Frohling has amassed 263 kills with 88 errors on 644 swings for a .272 success rate. She also leads the team with 0.42 aces/set and adds 1.05 digs/set and 0.52 blocks/set each match on average. Ahrens has marked 207 smashes with 66 errors on 452 attempts to post a .312 clip. She adds 0.25 aces/set, 1.35 digs/set and 0.75 blocks/set each match for the Waves. Scully has put up 257 kills with 106 errors on 731 swings for a .207 output. She adds 0.27 aces/set, 3.12 digs/set and 0.40 blocks/set.
MALIBU ROOFING COMPANY — Alli O'Harra and
Tarah Wylie have been the main managers in the Malibu Roofing Company, amassing 1.29 and 0.82 blocks/set respectively. O'Harra has marked 97 total blocks with seven solo rejections, and adds 1.49 kills/set on a .228 success rate, 0.08 aces/set and 0.33 digs/set. Wylie has been solid with 67 total rejections, including five solo jobs, while adding 2.01 kills/set on a .341 clip as well as 0.50 digs/set and 0.16 aces/set.
PLAYMAKERS — Blossom Sato is Pepperdine's primary playmaker, ranking 30th nationally with 10.99 assists/set. She has dished out 901 total assists this season thus far, while ranking third on the team with 20 total aces for 0.24 aces/set. She also has helped her team to 13.62 kills/set and a .256 success rate on the offensive, which both rank nationally. She has marked 0.35 kills/set and 2.16 digs/set.
CAN YOU DIG IT? — Hana Lishman has started in the libero position in all matches this season, totaling 315 digs for 3.84 digs/set. She has also added 59 assists for 0.72 assists/set and 17 aces for the Waves. In her three-year career thus-far, Lishman has amassed 1,179 total digs in 306 sets played. In her first match this season, she was solid in the back line with 26 digs, while against Santa Clara in the middle of the season she posted 21. In 18 matches this season she has marked double-figure digs with two over the 21-dig mark.
Madison Shields and
Jaiden Farr have also entered matches for defensive support, amassing 1.16 and 1.14 digs/set respectively.
LAST WEEK, TODAY — Last week on the road, Pepperdine split the trip with a sweep over Saint Mary's on Thursday and a five-set loss to Pacific on Saturday. Against the Gaels, the Waves produced 39 kills on a .277 success rate, with 33 assists, five aces, 54 digs and 13.0 blocks. Pepperdine allowed 32 kills on a .066 clip, with 30 assists, two aces, 57 digs and 6.0 blocks.
Shannon Scully led the team with 12 kills on a .294 hitting percentage, while adding 13 digs.
Hannah Frohling also hit for double-figure kills with 10 on a .333 clip and added four blocks and an ace in the effort.
Alli O'Harra led the team with eight blocks and amassed four kills, while
Heidi Dyer produced seven kills and six digs in an all-around effort.
Hana Lishman was big in the back row with 17 digs and a pair of aces and
Blossom Sato served as playmaker with 30 assists.
Tarah Wylie was also good for five kills, five blocks and an ace.
Then in the first five-set match of the season, the Waves came back from a 25-23 first set loss to win the second and third sets 26-24 and 25-15. After falling in the fourth 30-28, the Waves came out in a battle in the third set, but eventually loss by a staggering 21-19 final set result. Pepperdine was good for 60 kills on a .189 success rate, with 59 assists, 10 aces, 70 digs and 13.5 blocks. The Tigers amassed 71 kills on a .212 clip, with nine aces, 65 assists, 70 digs and 12.0 blocks. For the Waves, Scully highlighted with 26 kills and 20 digs, while Frohling also picked up 15 kills, two blocks and aces and seven digs. Lishman added 17 digs and Sato produced 45 assists and three aces. Wylie earned nine kills on a .381 output, with two aces and four blocks as well, while O'Harra led with eight blocks.
THE COMPETITION — Hawai'i leads Pepperdine with a 31-3 all-time record, dating back to the 1976 season when the Rainbow Wahine took a 2-1 win over the Waves. Pepperdine won a pair of back-to-back matches in five sets on the road in 1978 and another one in 1997, but since then Hawai'i has had the upper edge. UH is currently working with a 13-match winning streak over Pepperdine, including a pair of wins the last time the two teams faced in 2016.
Pepperdine holds a 55-24 all-time record against
Loyola Marymount, dating back to the 1976 season when the teams first faced and the Waves won in straight-sets. The Waves won three-straight through the 1981 campaign before LMU took their first win, a straight-set win in Los Angeles. Pepperdine has had two 10-or-more winning streaks, with 10 from 1987-91 including seven sweeps and 12 wins from 2006-12 with eight sweeps. Since 2015, LMU has posted a 4-2 record over Pepperdine. The two teams split the 2017 campaign, as each team won on the road in four-set victories. This season, the Lions have marked an 18-7 overall record and an 8-6 record within WCC action. Earlier this season, Pepperdine swept LMU in Malibu. Last week, the Lions fell in straight-sets at Pacific before defeating Saint Mary's in five sets.
