Waves Host PCH Cup Rival LMU on Saturday

MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team has one lone match on the docket for Saturday, a PCH Cup rival match-up against Loyola Marymount, a team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll this week.  The Waves are also receiving votes in the poll and are in 2nd place in the WCC standings this week, ahead of the 3rd-placed Lions.

TICKETS — Each match costs $10 for adults and $8 for alumni, children, seniors and non-Pepperdine students.  Tickets are free for Pepperdine students, faculty and staff with a valid Pepperdine ID.  Purchase tickets in advance at 866-WAVE-TIX or at the ticket office on game day.
 
SPLASH ZONE — Pepperdine has introduced a new student fan-experience for all home volleyball matches with the Splash Zone.  The zone will be located behind the service line in between the lobby and court.  All Pepperdine students are able to stand-in and support the Waves' teams in a rowdy new experience.  Anyone in the Splash Zone will also be first-eligible for that events giveaway.

PCH CUP — An annual all-sport competition between two local rivals that are separated by just 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, the PCH Cup is in its 10th season of existence. Pepperdine won the first five cups.  A home win is worth one point, a road victory is worth 1.5 points. In the nine years since the cup first began, the Waves have won seven-out-of-nine years, including the Waves 2017-18 win at 11.0 points to the Lions' 8.5.
 
SQUAD GOALS — With a 6-1 record to open West Coast Conference play, the Waves have opened league action with the best record since 2011.  In that year, the team went 15-1 overall to win the title outright, and kicked things off with a 13-match winning streak to start. 
 
Pepperdine is 12-5 overall this season.  As a team, Pepperdine produces 13.96 kills/set on a .270 success rate along with 13.26 assists/set, 1.71 aces/set, 14.26 digs/set and 2.05 blocks/set.  The Waves have allowed opponents 11.52 kills/set on a .188 output, along with 11.09 assists/set, 1.02 aces/set, 13.48 digs/set and 2.12 blocks/set. 
 
As a team, the Waves rank in the top-25 of four statistical categories: 18th with 13.26 assists/set and a 0.270 hitting percentage, 19th with 1.71 aces/set and 24th with 13.98 kills/set.  Blossom Sato ranks in two separate categories individually including 16th nationally with 11.28 assist/set, while Hannah Frohling ranks in three categories including 23rd with 0.47 aces/set.
 
CANNONS — Hannah Frohling, Rachel Ahrens and Shannon Scully lead the Waves with 3.36, 3.21 and 3.12 kills/set averages respectively.  All three have totaled over 150-kills so far this season.  Frohling has amassed 185 kills with 54 errors on 451 swings for a .290 success rate.  She also leads the team with 0.47 aces/set and adds 1.11 digs/set and 0.49 blocks/set each match on average.  Ahrens has marked 183 smashes with 57 errors on 398 attempts to post a .317 clip.  She adds 0.23 aces/set, 1.33 digs/set and 0.74 blocks/set each match for the Waves.  Scully has put up 178 kills with 71 errors on 506 swings for a .211 output.  She adds 0.35 aces/set, 2.89 digs/set and 0.35 blocks/set. 
 
MALIBU ROOFING COMPANY — Alli O'Harra and Tarah Wylie have been the main managers in the Malibu Roofing Company, amassing 1.18 and 0.84 blocks/set respectively.  O'Harra has marked 60 total blocks with five solo rejections, and adds 1.69 kills/set on a .279 success rate, 0.12 aces/set and 0.35 digs/set.  Wylie has been solid with 49 total rejections, including three solo jobs, while adding 2.03 kills/set on a .330 clip as well as 0.55 digs/set and 0.14 aces/set.
 
PLAYMAKERS — Blossom Sato is Pepperdine's primary playmaker, ranking 16th nationally with 11.28 assists/set.  She has dished out 654 total assists this season thus far, while ranking third on the team with 15 total aces for 0.26 aces/set.  She also has helped her team to 13.98 kills/set and a .270 success rate on the offensive, which both rank nationally.  She has marked 0.36 kills/set and 2.24 digs/set.
 
CAN YOU DIG IT? — Hana Lishman has started in the libero position in all matches this season, totaling 212 digs for 3.66 digs/set. She has also added 42 assists for 0.72 assists/set and nine aces for the Waves.  In her first match this season, she was solid in the back line with 26 digs, while against Santa Clara in the middle of the season she posted 21.  In 12 matches this season she has marked double-figure digs with two over the 20-dig mark.  Madison Shields, Jaiden Farr and Julia DiBona have also entered matches for defensive support, amassing 1.31, 0.90 and 0.88 digs/set respectively.
 
LAST WEEK, TODAY — Last week, Pepperdine extended the team's current winning streak to four-matches after taking down Pacific in four sets and sweeping Saint Mary's.  In the four-setter over the Tigers, Pepperdine posted 50 kills on a .293 clip, while adding nine aces, 11.0 team blocks and 51 digs.  The opposition marked 51 kills with a .175 success rate and added five aces, 47 digs, and 5.0 team blocks.  Hannah Frohling and Rachel Ahrens each hit for double-figure kills with 16 on a .433 success rate and 14 on a .290 clip respectively.  The pair also each had three aces, while Ahrens tallied five blocks, three assists and two digs and Frohling marked two blocks and three digs throughout.  Blossom Sato posted a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs, while adding four blocks and an ace and leading the Waves to a near-.300 hitting percentage.  Alli O'Harra led the team with seven blocks, while each Stao and Tarah Wylie posted four apiece. Hana Lishman led the squad with 17-digs, while Shannon Scully amassed 12 digs and added nine kills.
 
In the sweep over the Gaels, the Waves put up 49 smashes on a .327 clip with eight aces, 36 digs and 5.0 team blocks.  SMC posted 29 kills on a .217 success rate with an ace, 23 digs and 6.0 blocks throughout.  Frohling and Ahrens led the attack effort again with 12 kills on a .360 output and 11 kills on a .240 hitting percentage respectively.  Frohling added an ace and two digs and Ahrens added an ace, seven digs and two blocks.  Sato led with 43 assists and added eight digs, an ace and a block.  Scully had a team-best nine digs with two blocks, two aces and nine kills.  Wylie also marked nine kills on a career-best .750 success rate, while adding three aces, two digs and a block.  O'Harra led again with four blocks and Lishman finished the match with seven digs.
 
THE COMPETITION — Pepperdine holds a 54-24 all-time record against Loyola Marymount, dating back to the 1976 season when the teams first faced and the Waves won in straight-sets.  The Waves won three-straight through the 1981 campaign before LMU took their first win, a straight-set win in Los Angeles.  Pepperdine has had two 10-or-more winning streaks, with 10 from 1987-91 including seven sweeps and 12 wins from 2006-12 with eight sweeps.  Since 2015, LMU has posted a 4-2 record over Pepperdine.  The two teams split the 2017 campaign, as each team won on the road in four-set victories.  This season, the Lions are also receiving votes in the AVCA coaches poll this week after putting up a 15-3 overall record and a 5-2 record in WCC play this season.  The Lions lost in five sets to then-ranked #24 Cal Poly early in the season and their other two losses came in a sweep against Gonzaga on the road and a four-set loss to San Diego at home.
