MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team heads up North this week, as the Waves prepare to take on Saint Mary's and Pacific on Thursday and Saturday respectively. This week, Pepperdine is 3rd in the West Coast Conference, while SMC is 4th and Pacific is 7th.

SQUAD GOALS — With a 9-3 record to open West Coast Conference play earlier this season, the Waves opened league action with the best record since 2011. In that year, the team went 15-1 overall to win the title outright, and kicked things off with a 13-match winning streak to start.
Pepperdine is 15-7 overall this season and has also posted an 8-1 record at home. As a team, Pepperdine produces 13.76 kills/set on a .259 success rate along with 13.01 assists/set, 1.58 aces/set, 14.18 digs/set and 2.04 blocks/set. The Waves have allowed opponents 11.55 kills/set on a .192 output, along with 11.09 assists/set, 1.04 aces/set, 13.66 digs/set and 2.19 blocks/set.
As a team, the Waves rank in the top-40 of four statistical categories: 26th with 0.259 hitting percentage, 28th with 1.58 aces/set, 33rd with 13.01 assists/set and 40th with 13.76 kills/set.
Blossom Sato and
Hannah Frohling rank in the top-40 of one statistical category apiece with Sato ranking 18th with 11.16 assist/set and Frohling ranking 40th with 0.42 aces/set so far this season. Altogether, five players rank in seven different categories this week.
CANNONS — Hannah Frohling, Rachel Ahrens and
Shannon Scully lead the Waves with 3.35, 3.29 and 3.00 kills/set averages respectively. All three have totaled over 200-kills so far this season. Frohling has amassed 238 kills with 74 errors on 573 swings for a .286 success rate. She also leads the team with 0.42 aces/set and adds 1.06 digs/set and 0.49 blocks/set each match on average. Ahrens has marked 207 smashes with 66 errors on 452 attempts to post a .312 clip. She adds 0.25 aces/set, 1.35 digs/set and 0.75 blocks/set each match for the Waves. Scully has put up 219 kills with 98 errors on 645 swings for a .188 output. She adds 0.29 aces/set, 3.01 digs/set and 0.41 blocks/set.
MALIBU ROOFING COMPANY — Alli O'Harra and
Tarah Wylie have been the main managers in the Malibu Roofing Company, amassing 1.21 and 0.78 blocks/set respectively. O'Harra has marked 81 total blocks with six solo rejections, and adds 1.61 kills/set on a .245 success rate, 0.09 aces/set and 0.33 digs/set. Wylie has been solid with 58 total rejections, including three solo jobs, while adding 2.04 kills/set on a .347 clip as well as 0.51 digs/set and 0.14 aces/set.
PLAYMAKERS — Blossom Sato is Pepperdine's primary playmaker, ranking 18th nationally with 11.16 assists/set. She has dished out 826 total assists this season thus far, while ranking tied for fourth on the team with 16 total aces for 0.22 aces/set. She also has helped her team to 13.76 kills/set and a .259 success rate on the offensive, which both rank nationally. She has marked 0.35 kills/set and 2.15 digs/set.
CAN YOU DIG IT? — Hana Lishman has started in the libero position in all matches this season, totaling 281 digs for 3.80 digs/set. She has also added 55 assists for 0.74 assists/set and 15 aces for the Waves. In her three-year career thus-far, Lishman has amassed 1,145 total digs in 298 sets played. In her first match this season, she was solid in the back line with 26 digs, while against Santa Clara in the middle of the season she posted 21. In 16 matches this season she has marked double-figure digs with two over the 21-dig mark.
Madison Shields and
Jaiden Farr have also entered matches for defensive support, amassing 1.14 and 1.15 digs/set respectively.
LAST WEEK, TODAY — The Waves won a pair of home matches last week, defeating Santa Clara in four and San Francisco in three. Against SCU, the Waves marked 56 kills on a .224 output, with 54 assists, three aces, 59 digs and 6.0 blocks. Pepperdine allowed 42 kills on a .155 clip with 41 assists, one ace, 56 digs and 14.0 blocks to the Broncos.
Shannon Scully,
Hannah Frohling and
Heidi Dyer each led with 15, 14 and 13 kills respectively. Scull put in a .233 success rate with an ace, eight digs and four blocks, Frohling put up a .235 clip with two assists, digs and blocks and one ace, and Dyer added a .370 hitting percentage with one assist and three digs.
Blossom Sato led the squad with 48 assists, while
Hana Lishman and
Jaiden Farr tallied 21 and 14 digs respectively.
Alli O'Harra also put in four blocks for the Waves as well.
Against San Francisco, Pepperdine amassed 44 kills on a .305 hitting percentage, with five aces, 40 assists, 56 digs and 6.0 team blocks. The Waves allowed the opposition 27 kills on a .068 output, with four aces, 25 assists, 45 digs and 6.0 team blocks.
Tarah Wylie led the squad with 10 kills and no errors on 16 swings for a .625 success rate, while adding two aces as well. Dyer put up nine kills on a .320 clip with an ace and Frohling, O'Harra and Scully each put in eight kills. Frohling added an ace, eight digs and two blocks, O'Harra was good for four blocks and Scully added 12 digs and two blocks including one solo rejection. Lishman led with 17 digs and Sato commanded the offense with 36 assists and nine digs.
THE COMPETITION — This week, the Waves will take on both Saint Mary's and Pacific on the road. Against Saint Mary's, Pepperdine holds a 48-15 all-time record against the Gaels, dating back to the 1987 season when the Waves won the first match on the road in straight sets. After that, the Waves won the following 13-straight matches, including 11 by straight-set decisions. Pepperdine went on another winning streak against SMC from 1994-2003 when the team won 19-consecutive matches including 13 by straight-set results. Since 2012, the Waves have gone 9-3 against the Gaels, including a current four-match winning streak since 2016 with three sweeps, including a three-set win earlier this season at home. This season, the Gaels have gone 16-5 overall and 8-3 in the WCC after gathering 12.6 kills/set on a .243 success rate along with 11.8 assist/set, 1.7 aces/set, 13.8 digs/set and 2.2 blocks/set. SMC allows opponents 12.5 kills/set on a .211 clip, with 11.7 assists/set, 1.3 aces/set 14.6 digs/set and 2.0 blocks/set.
The Waves hold a 17-14 all-time record against Pacific, dating back to the 1977 campaign when the Waves won 2-0 on a neutral court. After that, Pepperdine won three more before Pacific went on a 10-match winning streak. However, from 1996-2017, the Waves have posted a 12-4 record against the Tigers, with a pair of five-match winning streaks mixed in between 2003-13 and 2015-17. Last season, Pepperdine and Pacific split with the Waves winning 3-1 at home and falling 3-1 on the road. Earlier this season, the Waves downed Pacific in four sets at home. This season, the Tigers have gone 8-14 overall with a 3-8 WCC record. The team marks 13.41 kills/set on a .207 success rate, along with 14.115 digs/set, 12.86 assists/set, 1.31 aces/set and 1.43 blocks/set, while allowing opponents 13.12 kills/set on a .200 clip, along with 12.55 assists/set, 13.69 digs/set, 1.21 blocks/set and 1.26 aces/set.
