MALIBU, Calif. " The Pepperdine men's volleyball team fell in four sets to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night in Firestone Fieldhouse after 28-26, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-23 final set scores.

Marv Dunphy VOLLEYBALL COURT

The highlight of the night came prior to the match when President Andrew Benton and Director of Athletics Steve Potts dedicated the Marv Dunphy Volleyball Court in honor of head coach emeritus Marv Dunphy. Many former players and coaches and current fans and friends came to support Dunphy and the Waves on Marv Dunphy Night.

WAVES VS. GAUCHOS

Pepperdine posted 38 kills on 102 swings for a .118 success rate, but UC Santa Barbara marked 52 kills on 123 attempts for a .220 hitting percentage to secure the win. The opposition was good for 11.5 blocks and five aces, compared to the Waves 11.0 team blocks and four aces. The teams were relatively equal in digs with the Gauchos marking 32 and the Waves tabbing 31 throughout the match.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The teams came out of the starting gate neck and neck en route to an 11-11 tie in the first set. Shortly after, UCSB gained the two-point advantage to pick up an edge. Colby Harriman tied things up with an ace late in the set at 22's, but the Gauchos worked ahead again for a set-point opportunities. The Waves battled off the Gauchos three set-point options and had one of their own, but UCSB had the momentum swing and secured the set with a 28-26 final mark.

The opposition worked ahead early in the second set towards a 14-7 lead, but Pepperdine closed the gap and tie things up with an 8-1 run courtesy of blocks from Clay Carr. After a few back and forth points, the Waves put the set away on a strong service performance from Robert Mullahey and a final block from Jack Cole and Harriman.

UCSB came out strong again in the third set and the Waves were unable to come back this time. After a 13-10 lead in the middle of the set, the opposition stayed three-points ahead throughout for a 25-22 set win to pull ahead 2-1.

In the fourth and final set, Pepperdine gained the early advantage with kills from Harriman and Noah Dyer en route to a 16-13 lead. The Gauchos were able to close the gap on a 3-0 run of their own and continued on towards a 25-23 final set score.
