SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Sophomore Hannah Frohling led the Pepperdine women's volleyball team with double-figure kills for the third-consecutive match, propelling the Waves to the first sweep of the 2017 campaign after a 25-14, 25-23, 28-26 win over Fresno State to close out the weekend on Saturday night in War Memorial Gym.

Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) and junior Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) tabbed 16 and 12 kills respectively, while Frohling added two aces and nine digs to the win. Junior setter Blossom Sato (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS/Mississippi State) dished out 41 assists and sophomore Hana Lishman (Kailua, Hawai'i/Punahou School) added 14 digs to help in the effort.

WAVES VS. BULLDOGS

Pepperdine outhit Fresno State with a .279 hitting percentage on 48 smashes, compared to a .156 output on 34 kills. The Waves also outperformed the Bulldogs 46-32 on assists, 44-38 with digs an 6.0-5.0 in team blocks, though the opposition posted six aces over Pepperdine's three.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

Pepperdine came out strong to open the match, posting a 9-1 lead with big services from Frohling and Lishman including Frohling's first ace of the match. The Waves continued to pound down on the Bulldogs with the big cushion fueling the fire and multiple kills from Gross, Frohling and Harris closed the set 25-14.

With the early advantage, Sato continued to dish out the strong offense in the second set and the Waves worked ahead to a 14-9 lead. Two pairs of kills late in the set from Dyer and Harris respectively kept Pepperdine ahead, but the opposition started inching to close the gap late in the set. After a 23-23 tie, a Bulldog service error and a smash from Frohling gave the Waves a two-set lead.

The Bulldogs put up a fight in the third set as Pepperdine and Fresno State exchanged 16 tie scores and eight lead changes throughout. After 10-10, 18-18 and 23-23 tie scores throughout, it was any team's set two take. Pepperdine fought off one set-point opportunity at the 23-24 mark and after battling for three of the team's own, the Waves put the match away with a kill from Dyer to make it a 28-26 set win.

Pepperdine returns to southern California to co-host the Pepperdine-CSUN Challenge with Cal State Northridge. The Waves host Northeastern on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. and Weber State on Saturday, September 2 at 12 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse. In the middle on Friday, September 1, the Waves trek to Northridge to challenge the Matadors at 7 p.m.
