SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Pepperdine women's volleyball (13-4, 5-1 WCC) stayed red-hot with a 3-0 sweep of the San Diego Toreros (7-8, 2-3 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Â
It is the second consecutive win for Pepperdine and the first back-to-back shutout victories recorded since November 8 (at Washington State) and November 15 (vs. Santa Clara) last season.
Â
Mariia Nikol Dvornikova posted an identical stat line to her Thursday one at Denver, racking up a team-leading 14 kills on 29 attacks. Chloe Pravednikov added 11, Ella Piskorz tallied nine, and Tristen Raymond had 37 assists to pair with 10 digs.
Â
"We were very efficient on both ends of the ball today with a very high offensive output hitting over .300," said Head Coach Scott Wong after the victory. "On the flip side, it was very difficult to score on us, which started with our serve and some tough defense."
Â
It was a much tighter contest in the second set as the Toreros blazed out to a 6-1 advantage. Pepperdine came right back with four consecutive points behind a pair of Eliya Dev service aces before Ryann Knuth's kill briefly broke the 6-6 tie. Neither team led by more than two until Nemo Beach's kill had San Diego out in front 20-17. The Waves came crashing back, ending the set on an 8-2 run thanks to a couple Pravednikov kills and a service ace from Iva Popovic. Lorenzen and Maggie Beauer put the finishing touches on with a combo block on Beach, and Pepperdine was in line with a broom as the Waves seeked another sweep.
Â
The third set was looking more of the same as the Toreros took a 13-9 lead following Kylie Munday's service ace. Pepperdine had one more rally left in them, storming back to capture a 17-16 after another Popovic service ace, as the graduate racked up five on the Waves' 10 in that department. Pepperdine pinned San Diego's back to the wall as the Waves forced a handful of Torero attack errors, leading 24-20. USD found one last breath of life and got kills from BayLea Sparks and Lauren Lynch (who also notched a service ace), but it was too little, too late as Pravednikov belted a kill to finish the sweep of Toreros.
