Freshman Hana Lishman (Kailua, Hawai'i/Punahou School) led the back row with 16 digs, while sophomore Ashley Morgan (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) added 15 as well.
Three other Waves had five kills or more with sophomore Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and freshman Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) adding eight apiece and junior Ashley Harris (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande HS/Arizona) posted seven. Wylie also posted five blocks including one solo and an ace, Frohling was good for two blocks and Harris added four blocks including one solo.
Freshman Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) had three blocks. Sophomore Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) came in late for Pepperdine, amassing a 4-0-7 attack output for a .571 success rate.
The first set started evenly on each side, with the score reaching the 9-9 mark before the 49ers (5-3) started to pull ahead. The home team worked towards a 16-8 run to take the first set 25-17 and go ahead 1-0 in the match.
After a quick break between sets, the Waves came out strong in the second, amassing a 9-6 start. The team's battled back-and-forth en route to a 16-16 tie, but Pepperdine kills from Frohling and Harris gave the Waves a late 20-18 advantage. Both teams reached the 20-20 mark, but the momentum was in Pepperdine's court as the Waves posted an ace from Lyons and a final set-winning by Dyer to close the set 25-23.
With an even 1-1 tie heading into the third, Pepperdine came out strong, picking up a 7-2 lead to start. The home team worked back to a two-point deficit with 13-12 on the scoreboard, but the Waves would refuse to give the opposition more than that as Frohling would help the Waves to an 18-14 lead with a kill. Pepperdine's energy was high down the back stretch and a pair of kills delivered by Wylie gave the Waves a 2-1 set advantage with a 25-17 set victory.
With the match on the line, the 49ers came out strong intent on sending the match to a fifth set. Despite the Waves' effort, Long Beach State worked ahead to a 15-9 lead the Pepperdine would be unable to overcome. Late in the set, the Waves went on a 6-1 run to attempt to close the gap, but LBSU tied the match with a 25-21 set victory.
In the fifth set, the Waves worked ahead early with a 4-1 lead fueled by an ace by Lishman and the attack efforts of Harris. Long Beach worked back, however, and after a 7-7 tie, took over the lead en route to the final 15-10 set five win.
