Pepperdine-Santa Clara Box Score
MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's basketball team enjoyed a successful Senior Night, with Stacy Davis and Jett Raines combining for 35 points and Jake Johnson making his first career start in an 88-76 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday evening.
Pepperdine improved to 17-11 and clinched a winning record in the West Coast Conference at 10-7 in its home finale, while dropping the Broncos to 10-18, 6-10.
Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) posted his third consecutive double-double and his 13th of the season (most by any Wave since 1994) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The senior forward was also honored pregame during a special ceremony for becoming the program's all-time leading scorer on Thursday.
Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, and fellow senior Johnson (Reno, Nev./Reno HS/Casper CC) had two rebounds.
Junior guard Lamond Murray Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) led the Waves with 25 points, his ninth time this season with 20 or more points. Junior guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) had 11 points and four assists while fellow junior guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS) posted a career-high 10 assists to go with six points. Freshman forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) added nine points.
"I'm excited for our seniors," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "We told our guys to do everything we can for these seniors, and they did a great job. I'm proud of how Jett and Stacy kind of carried us. We wanted to keep pounding it inside and they did a great job of attacking and finishing and getting fouled. I'm most proud of how between Jeremy, Amadi and Stacy those three had 18 assists and only two turnovers. To have 20 assists on 29 baskets, that's unselfish basketball."
The game was close throughout until a 12-0 Pepperdine run that lasted for three minutes gave the Waves their first double-digit lead of the game at 68-57 with under eight minutes to play. Davis made two free throws, Edwards finished a fast break in the paint, Raines made a free throw, Udenyi fed sophomore forward A.J. John (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS) for a dunk, Raines had a lay-up and Udenyi finished a three-point play.
The Broncos got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Pepperdine shot 50.9% for the game (53.6% in the second half), while the Broncos were at 45.6%. Santa Clara was 9-for-17 from distance at one point but missed its final nine three-pointers.
The Waves were able to draw 30 fouls and foul out three Broncos, and that led to a 26-for-34 (76.5%) performance from the free throw line.
The Broncos only led briefly in the first half. Tied at 18, the Waves went on a 6-0 run to go up 24-18, and later took their biggest lead of the half at seven points at 32-25 after a Davis three-point play. It was 32-28 at halftime.
The Waves had a couple of five-point leads early in the second half, but Santa Clara took its first lead of the half on a Jared Brownridge three-pointer that made it 56-54 with 11 1/2 minutes to play. The 12-0 run that began not long after put Pepperdine ahead to stay, however.
Pepperdine's fourth senior, Atif Russell (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes HS), has missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury.
Pepperdine closes out the regular season next Saturday (Feb. 27) at 1 p.m. at rival Loyola Marymount in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup game that will double as the WCC Game of the Week. The game will be shown locally on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Pepperdine Hall of Famer Al Epstein will have the call on WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
