IRVINE, California " Kevin Maeda ran the second-fastest 5,000 meters in men's program history, highlighting the Pepperdine track teams' two days of competition at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic.
"This turned out to be a pretty good meet for us," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Everyone is continuing to improve. We thought there might be rain, but we saw clear skies and cool temperatures both days. The injury bug has hit a few folks, so we had to make some adjustments on our relays. The highlight was Kevin in the 5K. He led early, for the first mile or so, then a couple of other guys took the lead. Kevin came back at the end and nearly won the whole race. I think he'll get the school record by the end of the season."
On Friday night, Maeda (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley HS) took second place out of 13 runners with a time of 14:38.69. The Waves' senior posted a PR by 16 seconds and finished not far behind Nick Heath's school record of 14:32.91 set last year.
Other men leading the Waves in their various races were freshman Kieran Halewyn (Lake Oswego, Ore./Southridge HS) in the 800, sophomore Treet Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) in the 1,500 and freshman Justin Touhey (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Preparatory HS) in the 3,000.
Freshman Sheridan Davis (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) was the women's team's top finisher in the 100 meters and the 100 hurdles. Other top-finishing Waves included freshman Scottie Sandlin (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory School) in the 200, freshman Taleah Phillips (Gibsons, B.C., Canada/Anacortes HS) in the 400, freshman Jessica Hibler (Yokosuka, Japan/Zama American HS) in the 800, freshman Emma Battin (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East HS) in the 1,500 and freshman Abbey Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS) in the 5,000.
The 1600 relay team, which featured freshman Kaitlyn Davenport (Bakersfield, Calif./Davenport HS), Phillips, Davis and Sandlin, posted a season-best time of 4:12.84.
Radnoti also recognized the performances of Kyle Johnson in the 5,000, Meck, Davenport, Phillips and Halewyn.
The next meet for the Waves is the Cal Poly Invitational next Saturday (March 24).
