MALIBU, Calif. — Competing in its penultimate meet of the regular season, the Pepperdine track team will head to Azusa Pacific University for the Franson Last Chance meet this Friday and Saturday.
Friday's action for the Waves begins with the prelims of the women's 100-meter hurdles at 3 p.m., then the meet will conclude with the men's 5,000-meter run at 7:31 p.m. Saturday's slate starts at 1:10 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay and wraps up with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:20 p.m. The meet will be livestreamed on FloTrack, albeit behind a paywall. All livestream and live stat links can be found on the Pepperdine track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Pepperdine will send 33 athletes to the two-day meet this weekend. The Waves are coming off another productive weekend at the Oxy Invite, where Pepperdine ran seven top-10 times and freshman Brittany Rivas lowered her school record in the 400-meter hurdles by running a 1:02.07. She will run in her signature event on Saturday at 3 p.m.
This weekend, the women's team has a good shot at breaking the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay school records. The Waves' 4x400-meter relay team of Rivas, Isabella Reyes, Jenna Parsio and Lexi Thomas won the Oxy Invite with a time of 3:52.51, marking the second-straight week the team finished within one second of the program record that has stood since 2017. They will race Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Pepperdine has several athletes aiming to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary, which accepts the top 48 individuals and 24 relay teams from the West Region. The aforementioned Rivas is ranked 129th in the West Region in the 400-meter hurdles, while her teammate Maddy Ortman is ranked 189th with her time of 1:03.52 from the Triton Invite.
On the men's side, freshman Elijah Gentry ranks 98th in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. This weekend, Gentry will return to the site of his school-record-breaking time of 9:07.84, which he ran at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Gentry will run at 10:20 p.m. tomorrow in search of not only becoming the first Wave to go sub-nine minutes in the event, but also breaking into the West Region's top 48 times. Right now, the 48th-fastest time in the region is 8:52.25.
