Stellar Scavone, Pecking Pepperdine Offense Evens Baseball's Series With San Francisco

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball (18-27, 12-8 WCC) got back in the win column with a 4-0 victory over the San Francisco Dons (21-23, 12-8 WCC).
"What a great response to yesterday's outcome," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "Tommy Scavone was brilliant! He worked all over the strike zone with four pitches, used his defense when needed, and got big strikeouts at key moments in the game."
"Our offense responded well too with 15 hits," continued LaTorre. "Although we only pushed across four runs, we did a very good job against a very good starting pitcher from USF who came into the game as one of the top arms in the conference. We stuck to our pregame approach and I'm glad to see our guys see the hard work pay off. The next step is cashing in our baserunners and scoring opportunities with more runs."
Scavone couldn't have pitched much better in the contest, slinging eight shutout innings in which he surrendered five hits but walked none and struck out seven. He accumulated 115 pitches, a career-high for him in a Pepperdine uniform. It marked his third quality start in his last four outings. One of nine seniors to be honored prior to Sunday's game, Scavone held the top of the San Francisco order (one through four spots) to 0-for-12 with four strikeouts.
It was a scoreless game through three innings despite the Waves having a runner in scoring position in the second and third inning. Pepperdine finally cashed in during the bottom of the fourth when Shawn Romero - out of the nine spot - cranked a RBI double into the right field corner, starting the scoring and giving Pepperdine a 1-0 lead. Daniel Patterson ensued four pitches later with a tapper to the pitcher's mound. The Dons starter, Gauge Lockhart, was caught in no man's land and Patterson reached as Aidan Camberg touched home. Julian Nunez tacked on a sac fly and it was 3-0 Waves before the inning ended.
Along the way, Pepperdine added an insurance run thanks to James Dell'Amico's RBI single to shortstop that scored Joshua Woodworth, making it 4-0 Waves. Although it wasn't a save situation, LaTorre brought in Lucien Wechsberg to close out the shutout victory.
"We are excited to get back out there tomorrow," added LaTorre. "First, we honor nine seniors prior to the game who have bought into our program and they are leaving Pepperdine Baseball better than they found it. After that, it's another Sunday rubber match in college baseball. Time to go execute and have fun!"

Scavone turned on cruise control and nearly faced the minimum in his last five innings of work. From the fourth innings through the eighth, Tommy only allowed five baserunners and punctuated his day with a foul out of Tino Vasell and a fly out from Isaiah Landry.Checking in with the man of the hour! @tommyscavone24 #MakeWaves | @PepperdineWaves pic.twitter.com/YdYHaAAMHU
