SANTA CLARA, Calif. -Â It was a tough night for Pepperdine baseball (22-29, 15-10 WCC) as the Waves fell to the Santa Clara Broncos (23-28, 11-14 WCC) by a final score of 10-0 on Thursday night.
Following Pacific's win over Portland and San Francisco's win over Saint Mary's, the Waves sit in third place, a half-game back of Pacific for the number two seed. Pepperdine is one full game in front of both San Fran and Saint Mary's for the number , but has the tiebreaker only over Saint Mary's.
The Waves can clinch at least the number three seed with a win and a San Francisco loss on Friday.
Santa Clara jumped out in front early, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double from Will Anderson. Pepperdine had a baserunner in the first three innings (walk, double, single), including a runner in scoring position in the first two innings, but couldn't crack the scoreboard.
Bryant Viskovich's RBI groundout extended the Broncos' lead to 3-0. Santa Clara's starting pitcher, Max Bayles, continued to mow down Pepperdine, recording 12 strikeouts through his six innings of scoreless work. The Broncos continued to buck Pepperdine in the fifth, tacking on a four-spot. Luke Devine ripped a single to left, plating Thomas Ferroggiaro. On the same play, left fielder Nash Horton threw well wide of the dish, as the ball caromed off the backstop which allowed Ben Cleary to touch home. Kam Croghan, in relief of Casey Euper, picked up the ball and tried to throw the ensuing runner out at home, but his throw was off the mark and that allowed another run to score. In the blink of an eye, Santa Clara had blown it open to a 7-0 lead.
Things didn't get much better for the Waves as Santa Clara added a run in the sixth before ending the contest on a Max Ross two-run inside-the-park homer to end the game in a mercy rule.
