Baseball Falls to Santa Clara

Following Pacific's late-night loss to Portland and San Francisco's win over Saint Mary's, the Waves are tied for third in the conference but hold the number four seed due to San Francisco holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Pepperdine. The Waves are still in a prime position to get the number two seed with a win, a Pacific loss, and a San Francisco loss. Pepperdine can climb into the three seed with a win, a Pacific win, and a San Francisco loss. Any other scenario, and the Waves will remain the four seed.
Despite a tough start to the series in Santa Clara, Pepperdine is now guaranteed to record its first top-four finish in conference since 2018 (1st place) in addition to its most conference wins since 2018 (at least 15).
"It's hard to get anything going when you're down as much as we were today," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre following Friday's contest. "Give Santa Clara a lot of credit for the past two games, they have played well in all three facets of the game. Offense, defense and pitching they have beaten us both days."
After a disappointing loss on Thursday, the Waves looked to turn the page quickly and started off on the right foot, getting a leadoff double from Daniel Patterson and a walk from Julian Nunez to start the first inning. Pepperdine couldn't cash in though and eventually fell behind 1-0 after the opening frame on a Luke Devine RBI single to put the Broncos ahead.
James Dell'Amico led off the second with a single but was immediately put out on a double play on the ensuing pitch, and Pepperdine's offense stalled. Camden Sos had a RBI single and Ben Cleary tacked on a two-RBI double, with Santa Clara holding a 4-0 advantage after the first pair of innings. Joshua Woodworth got Pepperdine on the board with a RBI single in the top of the third, but things didn't go much better after that..@15jwood gets us on the board!

The Broncos tallied a three-spot in the bottom of the third frame and led 7-1, never looking back as the Waves dropped the series with a 9-2 defeat.
"Time to flush these games and finish the regular strong tomorrow," added LaTorre. "We will be ready to go from pitch one tomorrow with the competitiveness that has suited us all year long. We have really put together a great second half of the season and I am proud of the resiliency of our young men."
