BELLEVUE, Wash. - Pepperdine baseball (16-26, 10-7 WCC) survived a ninth inning rally by the Seattle Redhawks (14-23, 9-8 WCC) to defeat their WCC rivals 7-6 Saturday night.
"What a game!" said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "It got close late, but it was great to see our guys close it out and deal with a ninth inning like that. Tommy was masterful once again. He's been so good for us, setting the tone for the game and allowing our offense to score him some runs."
Waves starting pitcher Tommy Scavone dealt another dandy, going seven strong innings in which he surrendered just a pair of runs (both earned). No. 24 has gone at least 5.1 innings in his last seven starts, dating back to March 13. The Waves have subsequently won five of those seven contests.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first inning on a Royce Hale RBI single, Pepperdine gave Scavone the support he needed in the third frame. Joshua Woodworth got the Waves on the board with a RBI single before Trey Dunn, hitting in the cleanup spot due to the absence of James Dell'Amico in the lineup, flipped his bat and watched a three-run blast fly over the left field wall to put the blue and orange in front 4-1.
The Waves had added another trio of runs to blow the contest wide open to a 7-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Shawn Romero went opposite field on a RBI single through the right side, plating the speedy Kai Laxa. The lineup wrapped around to the top of the order again and Julian Nunez was able to plate Joe Cardinale and Romero on a fielder' choice.
"Our two big innings were the difference in the ball game and they were the epitome of what we've been trying to achieve offensively as a team concept," added LaTorre. "It all started with a two-out, two-strike walk by Daniel Patterson. Daniel stole second and Nunez walked to bring up Josh Woodworth, who had a great at bat to hit a two-strike single to right field to score Patterson. Then Trey Dunn got to a hanging off speed pitch and didn't miss it."CONGRATULATIONS to former Wave baseball player Chad Tracy on his appointment to Interim Manager for the Boston @RedSox ‼️‼️#MakeWaves | @PepperdineWaves https://t.co/I9Qz0DcGZZ

"The next inning was another 2-out rally that saw Shawn Romero have a huge 2-strike RBI single, followed by a single by Joe Cardinale with a single of his own," continued LaTorre. "Once again, Patterson drew a walk to load the bases for Nunez who hit a ground ball to shortstop. With about as high of an IQ play as you'll find, Daniel Patterson ran through second and beat the force out and Cardinale scored from second! Game changing play!"
Scavone settled in and sat down 10 consecutive Redhawks, beginning with the last out of the third inning and culminating in a Jake Beauchaine popout in foul territory to first baseman Finley Buckner to end the sixth.
Hayden Carlson cut the Pepperdine lead to 7-2 after a solo shot in the seventh, before Beauchaine added a RBI single in the eighth. Still, Pepperdine held a relatively comfortable 7-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Seattle pulled within two following a Payton Knowles two-RBI single, with both runs being charged to Jack Fowler after Gage Maya came in relief for him. Maya was able to get a pair of outs before LaTorre went to Austin Plisinski to get the final out. He gave up a single moments later to Tyler Jackson, putting the tying run in scoring position before getting Beauchaine to strike out swinging and end the rally, giving Pepperdine a 7-6 win.
"For Maya and Plisinski to come in with runners on base, the game on the line, and to stay composed and execute pitches was amazing to see," continued LaTorre. "Seattle has been playing really well and to come up here and take the first two games is really important for the growth of our program. Tomorrow is another massive game in the WCC."
GAME NOTES
- Dunn's home run was his eighth of the season, tying for second-most (8) on the Waves with Woodworth. It only trails Daniel Patterson's nine.
- Each team stranded eight runners.
- Both squads had three walks.
Pepperdine will attempt to break out the brooms and get greedy with a series sweep tomorrow in the series finale, which is scheduled for a 1:05 pm PT first pitch on ESPN+.
