Woodworth Helps Will Waves Baseball to Series Win Over LMU

"It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to win," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre after the victory. "To have LMU tie the game and to respond with three of our own only to give 4 runs back, was a roller coaster ride. However, we never quit and we fought back for a gritty four runs in the 8th inning to get the ball to Lucien to close it out."
It was a fast first three innings, with the game remaining scoreless. It was Shawn Romero who broke open the scoring in the fourth on a RBI single that plated James Dell'Amico. Danny Cook added a sac fly to score Joshua Woodworth before Pepperdine jammed more traffic on the bases. After a Nash Horton infield single loaded the bases, Trey Dunn scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 before Daniel Patterson ended the inning with a flyout.
LMU responded in the bottom of the frame on a double steal, with Zion Williams scoring from third as Luca Danos swiped second base. Starting pitcher Tommy Scavone got out of the inning with a groundout of J.D. Dunn. Loyola Marymount would eventually tie the game in the sixth and force Scavone out of the game largely in part to a pair of hit by pitches and a wild pitch. Jack Fowler came in relief of Scavone and surrendered consecutive singles before ending the inning on a fielder's choice.
Scavone was sharp overall, coming up an out short of a quality start. He gave up three runs (all earned) in 5.2 innings on five hits. He walked only one and recorded five strikeouts across 24 batters faced.
"Tommy did a great job today," added LaTorre. "He continues to be a huge part of the success we've been having on Saturdays. The free passes late in the game along with a couple defensive miscues allowed LMU back into the game. We will get that cleaned up."
Pepperdine swung the momentum pendulum back in its favor with a three-spot in the top of the seventh as Woodworth demolished a belt-high fastball that sailed over the Blue Monster for a three-run dinger. Combined between the two games at LMU this weekend, Woodworth, a freshman, is 8-for-10 with five runs scored and four RBI. He has raised his batting average from .214 to .265 and his OPS from .693 to .822 in that span.
"Josh Woodworth continues to have great at bats, as does Danny Cook which has given us depth to the lineup to go with Patterson, Nunez, and Dell'Amico," continued LaTorre. "Our offense continues to put pressure on the opposition and that's great to see. Especially back to back days. The lineup is working together to put up multiple runs in innings and we are scoring with 2 outs which are momentum turning plays."CONGRATS on the title and thanks for your support‼️🏆#MakeWaves | @PepperdineWaves https://t.co/N7g48S1tE3

LMU answered right away with a four-run bottom of the seventh, scoring all four runs without needing to do much. The Lions scored two runs on an error by Nunez at shortstop before Nate Stiveson walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. One batter and two pitches later after Jackson Pace entered the game for Pepperdine, Matt Moreno was plunked and LMU suddenly had a 7-6 advantage.
Once again, Pepperdine took all of LMU's momentum and stole it back, responding with four more runs in the eighth. Moreno committed an error that allowed Dell'Amico to reach, while Cook scored and Joe Cardinale (who pinch-ran for Aidan Camberg, who pinch-hit for Horton) touched home. Dunn then reached on another error by Moreno before Laxa added a RBI single to extend Pepperdine's lead back to 10-7.
Lucien Wechsberg came in for the eighth and nine innings and faced the minimum, going six-up, six-down to earn his fifth save of the season. The graduate student has been involved in eight of the Waves' 13 wins (three wins, five saves). To top off the win, Pepperdine had a group of special guests' in the crowd cheering them to victory.
"It was also great to have Pepperdine Men's Tennis in the stands rooting us on," said LaTorre. "Our guys felt the support and they were loud! Congrats to them winning the WCC regular season championship."
