SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team (11-25, 6-6 WCC) dropped its midweek matchup at Cal Poly (19-16, 10-5 Big West) by a final of 7-3.
The Waves jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a RBI double by Nunez and a RBI single by Kai Laxa. Pepperdine extended the lead to 3-0 after Nunez struck again with a RBI single, plating Daniel Patterson.
"What a great start to the game," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "We scored first and then added on. Austin Plisinski gave us three quality innings before a defensive miscue led to runs in the 4th. We just couldn't sustain any momentum offensively and Cal Poly took advantage of their opportunities."
Plisinski, who made his second career start tonight in a bullpen game for Pepperdine, didn't blink through the first two innings and it took until the third for Cal Poly to get its first hit. Plisinski ran into a string of bad luck in the frame, as Nate Castellon singled off the glove of first baseman Finley Buckner. One batter later, Alejandro Garza dumped a single into right field despite a good effort from Kai Laxa, who attempted to make an over-the-shoulder catch as it popped off his glove and Braxton Thomas scored.
The Mustangs followed the third inning up with a three-spot in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage. Dylan Kordic took Gabe Maya, who relieved Plisinski, deep for a three-run shot, and Cal Poly never looked back. The Mustangs added two more in the fifth and tacked on one run of insurance thanks to a Ryan Tayman RBI single. Pepperdine had just five baserunners in the last six innings and was unable to bring any around in the 7-3 loss.
"There were a lot of bright spots, however; we only walked one batter, Jake Guardiancic did a great job in his two innings of work, and offensively Kai Laxa, Finley Buckner and Joe Cardinale had great at-bats," added LaTorre. "Hopefully we can continue to build into this weekend against LMU."
