Baseball Scores 10 Unanswered to Defeat Pacific

Â
"Huge response from our team after the late inning loss yesterday," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "It started on the mound with Tommy Scavone allowing our offense to weather the storm a bit. Our bats came out a little cold. Seven strong innings out of Tommy is just what we needed to give our offense the time it needed to bust out for the four run inning. Ultimately, the four-run inning happened because our hitter decided to work together and stick to a team first approach. They allowed the game to come to them rather than press and feel the pressure on each at bat."
Â
Pacific started the scoring with a trio of runs in the top of the fifth. A pair of walks and a couple singles from JT Shank and Brendan O'Sullivan helped the Tigers take a 2-0 lead before Grant MacArthur blooped a RBI single to shallow left, scoring O'Sullivan to extend it to 3-0.
Â
Pepperdine was seemingly in an offensive coma through five innings, getting just one hit off Pacific starting pitcher Adan Perez. The Waves jolted awake from their slumber to rack up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth, forcing Perez out of the game. Pepperdine tallied five hits in the frame, starting with Shawn Romero's single. Julian Nunez and James Dell'Amico eventually ripped singles before Joshua Woodworth came through with the bases loaded after a pitching change, lining a single past a diving MacArthur at third base. Romero and Nunez scored easily while Dell'Amico advanced to third. Trey Dunn followed up by smashing a RBI single to plate Dell'Amico, while Woodworth dashed to third. Kai Laxa ensued with a RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Woodworth to make it 4-3 before the inning was over.
Â
Patterson extended the lead to 5-3 by shooting a single to left field, scoring Nash Horton. Pepperdine wouldn't slow down in the eighth. Joe Cardinale, who entered the game defensively for Aidan Camberg in the top of the seventh, scalded a ground-rule RBI double to the right field corner to plate Woodworth, with Laxa standing at third base. Nash Horton was intentionally walked and Romero climbed into the batter's box with one out and the bases loaded. Romero took an 0-1 fastball and sent it over the left field wall, putting the dagger in the Tigers with a grand slam, his first career home run. His long ball put Pepperdine ahead for good, 10-3, as Jack Fowler polished off the win with a clean ninth inning.
"The key to today was extending the lead after we gained it," continued LaTorre. "We manufactured a run in the 7th with great team baseball and then broke it open in the 8th with a big blast from Shawn Romero. Prior to the grand slam, the at bats were focused and competitive. Exactly what we have been preaching for weeks now."ORDER UP FOR @ScoopRomero, HE'LL TAKE A GRAND SALAMI 🥪

Fowler tossed the eighth and ninth innings to help save the bullpen in relief of Waves starter Tommy Scavone, who was sharp in seven innings of work. His outing marked the fifth consecutive start he's gone at least 5.1 innings, including four times of six innings or longer. The Tigers sprayed seven hits off Scavone but he limited the damage to three runs (all earned) and walked only two while striking out five. He forced Pacific to get under the ball at a high rate, inducing 11 flyouts to only three groundouts.
Â
"Once again, Tommy gave us the chance," added LaTorre. "We turned a huge double play in the seventh inning to achieve a shutdown inning after our four spot in the bottom of the sixth. Being able to hand the ball to Jack Fowler and have him come in, filling up the zone, and finishing the game was huge. Rubber match tomorrow with another conference series on the line. College baseball at its best."

GAME NOTES
- Both teams tallied three walks.
- Pacific stranded six runners on base while the Waves left five aboard.
