Baseball Falls in Series Finale Versus Pacific

"Frustrating to lose a home conference series, but credit to Pacific for taking two games," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "We just didn't come out ready to play and that's on me as the head coach on preparing our players. Once again, like Friday and Saturday, we came back to tie the game after going down early. We just couldn't do enough offensively to score nor to hold off Pacific from scoring themselves. Seemed like when we would get something going, they would make a pitch or make a defensive play. On the contrary, when they got something going they capitalized and made the best of their opportunities."
Pacific jumped out in front right away off Waves' starter Collin Valentine, getting two aboard on walks before Braeden Schnabel dumped a single into shallow right, scoring Alex Dolan and Grant MacArthur. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 in the second when Derek Bartram led off with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and then scored on a Rylan Evans double.
Pepperdine had no problem answering, dropping a three-spot in the bottom of the third. Daniel Patterson nuked his team-leading ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot to bring the Waves within one. Julian Nunez eventually worked a walk and then stole second base before Joshua Woodworth chopped a RBI single that stayed on the infield, scoring Nunez to tie the game as O'Sullivan prevented the ball from going into the outfield.
The contest remained knotted at three apiece until the sixth. Dylan Stewart relieved Valentine and gave up a leadoff double to Schnabel, who scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 Tigers. Pacific added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Robert Orr worked a full-count walk before advancing around the diamond on consecutive singles from Bartram and Diego Davis, respectively. Pepperdine responded with a run in the bottom of the frame starting with some hustle from Kai Laxa, who slow-rolled an infield single before forcing a throwing error on O'Sullivan, reaching second base to put the tying run at the plate. Laxa ended up scoring on a Danny Cook double two batters later, pulling Pepperdine back within one at 5-4 entering the ninth.Artemis II landed on Friday, but Daniel Patterson just went liftoff for his 9⃣th blast of the year‼️

Everything unraveled for the Waves in the top of the ninth. Pepperdine played the matchup card and ended up bringing out a quad of bullpen arms, as Kam Croghan and Gabe Maya each faced one batter (combining for five pitches) before Lucien Wechsberg came in to try to keep it a close game. The Tigers tagged him for two singles, two walks, and a sac bunt that scored four more runs (two charged to Wechsberg) to blow the game open as Pepperdine fell 9-4.
"There's still a lot of conference left to play and we are in a great spot to learn from this past weekend," continued LaTorre. "Anyone can win this conference, why can't it be us? I'm excited to get back on the field with our players tomorrow for practice and prepare for Cal Poly Tuesday and LMU this weekend."
GAME NOTES
- Patterson's two-hit game today extended his hitting streak to nine, the longest on the team this season.
- Pepperdine racked up seven walks, while Pacific had six.
