Baseball Drops Game One Versus Pacific

MALIBU Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team (10-23, 5-5 WCC) came up short in a high-scoring affair against Pacific (11-21, 3-7 WCC), falling 8-7.
"Frustrating loss today, but we have a great opportunity to bounce back tomorrow," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre after the game. "Casey Euper pitched really well today. Just a few mistakes throughout his 6 strong innings, but overall, he gave us a chance to win. Unfortunately, we couldn't extend that lead and UOP did a great job of putting pressure on our defense and pitching staff. They ultimately came through with clutch hits and we couldn't close it out. We will respond appropriately tomorrow because that's who we are as a team."
Each team's respective starting pitcher was rolling through three innings, as the squads entered the fourth frame scoreless. That changed in the top half of the inning when Jake Tandy blasted a two-run home run off of Euper to make it 2-0 Tigers. Casey was able to get through the rest of the inning, giving Pepperdine a chance to tie it in the bottom half of the frame. Danny Cook came up in the clutch with two outs and the bases loaded, knocking a two-RBI single to third, scoring Trey Dunn and Kai Laxa. Max Aude was stranded at third, and the game remained tied 2-2 going to the sixth.
Grant MacArthur put Pacific back in front with a RBI double to left field, scoring Tandy to make it 3-2 in favor of the Tigers. The Waves responded by opening the floodgates, racking up a five-spot and putting Euper in line for the win following his quality start (six innings, three runs, all earned). The outburst began with a pinch-hit two-RBI triple by Nash Horton that found the wall in the left-center field gap, bringing in Dunn and Laxa again. Joe Cardinale followed with a RBI single back up the middle to easily score Horton. Pepperdine was able to get the top of the order back to the dish and were able to cash in more runs, as Daniel Patterson scalded a RBI single to deep center. The ball kept carrying and Cardinale was able to touch home from first base. Julian Nunez wasn't ready to tap the brakes yet, ripping a RBI single back to center field, scoring Patterson, and it was suddenly 7-3 Waves.
"Offensively, we answered Pacific's 2 runs with two of our own, which is great to see," continued LaTorre. "In the 6th inning after going down by one run, we responded again with 5 of our own. Highlighted with a huge pinch hit triple by Nash Horton and several 2-out RBI."
Pacific had no quit, answering right away in the top of the seventh off Dylan Stewart. Robert Orr smashed a RBI single to left before Tandy added to his extraordinary day by walloping a two-RBI single to right field, pulling Pacific back within a run at 6-7.We ain't done yet! Nuney cranks a RBI single to left-center! We've got a football score in this baseball game! 🏈⚾️

It looked like Pepperdine would pull off a close victory but Tandy had other plans. With two outs, the Tigers put two on against closer Lucien Wechsberg before Tandy ripped a two-RBI single to left, putting Pacific back in front 8-7.
