RV Women's Soccer Wraps Up Non-Conference Play Against San Diego State

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (3-3-1), who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, plays the final non-conference match of the season against San Diego State (1-2-1) Thursday afternoon at home.
 
"I think it is going to be a tough game," Head Coach Tim Ward said. "We're going to try and finish the non-conference chunk strong."
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Waves shutout Arizona 3-0 in Tucson Sunday morning.
  • Julia Quinonez and Kyra Murphy both tabbed their second goals of the season, while Alex Pendleton secured her first collegiate goal.  
  • The Pepperdine defense put together their third shutout in four matches as Jillian Medvecky collected a career-high seven saves.
 
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Pepperdine has scored 12 goals by nine individuals, with Peyton Leonard, Quinonez, and Murphy all with two.
  • Tabitha LaParl has been a part of 1/3 of the goals with four assists on the year.
  •  Leading the team through six matches, LaParl has six points with a goal and four assists. She is tied with Quinonez who has two goals and two assists.
  • Through her career, LaParl has amassed 10 goals and 11 assists, including six goals and two assists last season to be the top offensive returner for the Waves.
  • Tatum Wynalda has scored 19 goals with eight assists throughout her career.
  • Medvecky has 35 saves so far on the season, averaging 5.0 per match.
  • The Waves are coming off a 2024 season which saw the program's fifth WCC Championship after finishing (6-1-3) in the conference. The title was split with Santa Clara who posted the same mark in the WCC.
  • Pepperdine returns nine of the starting 11 from last season.
  • The last time the program won back-to-back conference titles was 2016 & 2017 as Pepperdine looks to win the WCC outright for just the second time ever.
  • Pepperdine has scored nine goals this season by eight different players.
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • In 12 matches against SDSU, Pepperdine is 8-3-1 all time, including 4-1 in Malibu.
  • The most recent matchup came in San Diego two years ago, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
  • 2022 was the last win for the Waves, beating the Aztecs 4-0 in Malibu.
 
SCOUTING THE AZTECS
  • Through four games, SDSU is 1-2-1 with the lone win coming over Cal State Bakersfield.
  • Most recently, the Aztecs are coming off a 0-0 tie to crosstown rival UC San Diego.
  •  Being outscored 1-7 on the year, the one goal on the year was scored by Victoria Miller, assisted by Katie Senn and Mia Lane.
 
 
The game Sunday is slated for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. It is also our mental health awareness game, where the team will be partnering with Katie's Save during mental health awareness month to honor the late goalkeeper. Rally towels will be handed out to the first 100 fans in attendance. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required) and live stats will be available at www.pepperdinewaves.com
 
ABOUT PEPPERDINE WOMEN'S SOCCER
Pepperdine women's soccer has been competitive since season one in 1993. As just the third head coach in the program's history, Tim Ward has led the Waves to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, winning the West Coast Conference five separate times and taking his squad to the round of 16 four times, most recently in 2021. With 23 winning seasons, Ward has proven he can lead consistently with excellence, garnering an overall record of 309-152-77.
