RV Women's Soccer Rounds Out Trip at University of Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Pepperdine women's soccer (2-3-1), who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, finishes the week at the University of Arizona (4-2) in Tucson, Ariz., playing the Wildcats Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
 
"We've shown that we're a tough team and a resilient, gritty team" Head Coach Tim Ward said. "Hopefully we can dust ourselves off and pick ourselves up and go again, because that's what Waves do. We rise up and we go again."
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Waves lost 0-1 to the Sun Devils of Arizona State Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz.
  • The home team scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute. 
  • Despite the final result, Pepperdine outshot ASU 18-6.
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Six matches into the season, Peyton Leonard has started five, averaging nearly 85 minutes a match.
  • Leonard earned a spot of the Top Drawer Soccer team of the week last week for her goal against Columbia in Malibu.
  • Leading the team through five matches, Tabitha LaParl has five points with one goal and three assists.
  • Through her career, LaParl has amassed 10 goals and 10 assists, including six goals and two assists last season to be the top offensive returner for the Waves.
  • Wynalda has scored 19 goals with eight assists throughout her career.
  • Jillian Medvecky has 28 saves so far on the season, averaging 4.67 per match.
  • The Waves are coming off a 2024 season which saw the program's fifth WCC Championship after finishing (6-1-3) in the conference. The title was split with Santa Clara who posted the same mark in the WCC.
  • Pepperdine returns nine of the starting 11 from last season.
  • The last time the program won back-to-back conference titles was 2016 & 2017 as Pepperdine looks to win the WCC outright for just the second time ever.
  • Pepperdine has scored nine goals this season by eight different players.
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • In 14 matches against the Wildcats, the Waves hold an 11-1-2 advantage, including a 4-1-1 record in Tuscon.
  • The last matchup came last season in Malibu, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
  • The last time on the road was 2022, where Pepperdine secured a 2-0 shutout win.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
  • Posting a 4-2 record on the year, Arizona's two losses come in the past 10 days to #1 Stanford and Cal, Berkeley. 
  • Most recently, Arizona beat the University of Denver 2-1 at home Thursday.
  •  Four players have scored two goals for the Wildcats, with Lily Boydstun and Aurora Gaines leading the pack with six points each.

Pepperdine women's soccer has been competitive since season one in 1993. As just the third head coach in the program's history, Tim Ward has led the Waves to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, winning the West Coast Conference five separate times and taking his squad to the round of 16 four times, most recently in 2021. With 23 winning seasons, Ward has proven he can lead consistently with excellence, garnering an overall record of 309-152-77.
