RV Women's Soccer Heads to Arizona for Two-Match Trip

TEMPE, Ariz. – Pepperdine women's soccer (2-2-1), who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, heads to Arizona State (4-0-2) in Tempe, Ariz. to play the Sun Devils Thursday.
 
"They're off to a good start and that is why they're on our schedule," Head Coach Tim Ward said. "It's never an easy place to go. The match all comes down to moments and you create a few moments based on how you do things and how you're comfortable doing those things."
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Waves earned the second shutout in a row, beating Columbia 3-0 in Malibu.
  • Layla Simon notched her first collegiate goal as a freshman. 
  • Tabitha LaParl secured her first goal of the season, leading Pepperdine with five points. 
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Five matches into the season, Wynalda has started all five, averaging over 60 minutes per match.
  • Leading the team through five matches, LaParl has five points with one goal and three assists.
  • Through her career, the LaParl has amassed 10 goals and 10 assists, including six goals and two assists last season to be the top offensive returner for the Waves.
  • Wynalda has scored 19 goals with eight assists throughout her career.
  • Jillian Medvecky has 25 saves so far on the season, averaging 5.0 per match.
  • The Waves are coming off a 2024 season which saw the program's fifth WCC Championship after finishing (6-1-3) in the conference. The title was split with Santa Clara who posted the same mark in the WCC.
  • Pepperdine returns nine of the starting 11 from last season.
  • The last time the program won back-to-back conference titles was 2016 & 2017 as Pepperdine looks to win the WCC outright for just the second time ever.
  • Pepperdine has scored nine goals this season by eight different players.
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Pepperdine will face Arizona State for just the 10th time in program history Thursday.
  • Overall, the Waves are 3-3-3 against the Sun Devils with the last win coming in 2006. 
  • The last matchup was a decade ago in 2015, resulting in a 0-5 loss.
  • The Waves last visited Phoenix in a 0-1 loss in 2012.
 
 
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
  • Arizona State has not lost a game this season, posting a 4-0-2 record with the ties coming against Texas and Northern Arizona. 
  • Most recently, the Sun Devils beat New Mexico State 1-0 at home.
  • Three different players have netted two goals for ASU, while Cameron Valladares leads the team in assists with five.

As just the third head coach in the program's history, Tim Ward has led the Waves to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, winning the West Coast Conference five separate times and taking his squad to the round of 16 four times, most recently in 2021. With 23 winning seasons, Ward has proven he can lead consistently with excellence, garnering an overall record of 309-152-77.
