Crawford Takes down 5K Record in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Pepperdine track sophomore Lizzy Crawford's record-breaking run in the 5,000-meter run highlighted the Waves' stint during a pair of meets at Cal State Fullerton over the weekend.

In Friday night's AstroAi Distance Classic, Crawford broke head coach Lauren Floris' school record with her time of 16:47.22. That run brings the team's season total to 15 new school records (across indoor and outdoor seasons). All told, the Waves ran 10 new top-10 marks over the weekend.

Racing in the fastest heat of the 5K, Crawford ran relatively even splits during the course of the

12.5-lap race. She worked her way up by rattling off 81-second lap splits until she closed out the race with her fastest lap of the evening. On the final lap, Crawford placed fourth and held off UC San Diego's Christel Elkins down the stretch to cross the line in 16:47.22 — a seven-second improvement over Floris' previous school record of 16:54.24. The sophomore now owns the program's indoor and outdoor 5K records, both of which she set this year.

Earlier on Friday night, three men's distance runners ran top-10 marks in the 5K. Sophomore Gordy Nilsen ran a new personal-best time of 14:30.38, which is the fourth-fastest time in program history. In the same heat, Patrick Thomas and Elijah Gentry ran personal-best times of 14:33.56 and 14:34.58, respectively, which rank sixth and seventh at Pepperdine. In the 1,500-meter run, Hannah Bruner ran a new personal-best time of 4:41.70, moving her up to fifth all-time at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine's trio of 100-meter hurdlers Maddy Ortman, Lauren Rocco and Brittany Rivas kicked off Saturday's action by running new top-10 times. Ortman moved into a tie for fourth all-time with her 15.45-second run, while Rocco (16.18) and Rivas (16.23) broke into the top-10 at eighth and ninth, respectively. Rocco went on to run another PR in the 400-meter hurdles; her time of 1:07.54 is ninth all-time at Pepperdine.

Fellow sprinter Ava Maly also ran a new collegiate personal best time in the 100-meter dash. The sophomore's time of 12.51 seconds is eighth in program history.

The Waves will take a week off before competing at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and the Jum Bush Legends Meet, held from March 21-22. All schedule updates can be found on the track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
