Women’s Soccer Hosts Saint Mary’s in Senior Day Match

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (9-4-2, 6-0-1 WCC) will play Saint Mary's (9-2-3, 4-1-2 WCC) on Senior Day Saturday at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
 
"It's a big game, but it's no bigger than any other game we've played so far," Head Coach Tim Ward said. "As long as we give our very best effort, that's all we can do."
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Two goals in the last 15 minutes of play were split between Pepperdine and LMU to end the match in a 1-1 tie.
  •  Layla Simon scored her second of the season in the 79th minute.
  • The Waves outshot the Lions 21-8, including 15-3 on target.
 
GAME NOTES
 
  • Pepperdine leads the conference with 37 goals scored by 14 different players.
  • Quinonez leads the squad with nine goals, while Wynalda leads the team and conference with eight assists.
  • Ariana Markey, Alex Pendleton, Layla Simon, Sarah Spears and Lily Stewart have all scored their first collegiate goals this season.
  • Through 15 matches, Julia Quinonez leads the team in points with 21, scoring nine goals and notching three assists.
  • Surpassing her stats from two seasons ago where she was the WCC Freshman of the Year, Quinonez is first in the West Coast Conference in goals with nine and second in points with 21.
  • As one of the captains leading the team through 15 matches, Kyra Murphy cemented her name in the record books with five straight matches with a goal or assist  (9/7 - 10/4), tying for third in program history.
  • With 19 starts and six goals throughout her collegiate career entering this season, Murphy has over doubled her career points, with 13 so far this season.
  • Tatum Wynalda sits at eighth in the nation for shot accuracy with a .647 on-goal shot percentage.
  • Leading the team with eight assists, Wynalda has had a hand in one-third of the Waves goals this season with four herself.
  • Wynalda is tied with Tabitha LaParl to lead Pepperdine with two match-winning goals, both coming in conference matchups against Seattle and Pacific.
  • Wynalda becomes just the 13th Wave in history to have two or more multi-assist games in a single season after the two at San Diego, currently just one match behind the top spot of three matches.
  • Starting in every game, Jillian Medvecky has collected 62 saves this season with seven shutouts, averaging just over four saves a match.
  • Last week, Medvecky earned her first conference honor with WCC Defensive Player of the Week, also earning an honorable mention on Top Drawer Soccer's team of the week. 
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • In 31 matches with Saint Mary's, Pepperdine holds the advantage 15-8-8 with a 9-3-3 edge in Malibu.
  • Last season, the Waves tied the Gaels 1-1 in Moraga
  • The last time the two squads met in Malibu, Pepperdine shut out SMC 3-0.
  • The last loss to the Gaels came in 2018 on the road 0-1.
  • In the last 10 matchups, Pepperdine has the upperhand with a record of 4-2-4.
 
SCOUTING THE GAELS
  • Holding a 9-2-3 overall record, including 4-1-2 in the West Coast Conference, SMC is currently second in conference standings.
  • The most notable result came in September when the Gaels shutout the Georgetown Hoyas, #16 at the time, with a final of 2-0.
  • Last time out, SMC beat San Diego on the road 2-1.
  • Sydney Middaugh leads the squad with seven goals while four different Gaels hold the top-assist spot with three apiece.
 
The senior day match will kickoff at noon with a short senior day presentation beforehand. Commemorative Willie the Wave hats will also be given to the first 100 fans in attendance. As just the third head coach in the program's history, Tim Ward has led the Waves to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, winning the West Coast Conference five separate times and taking his squad to the round of 16 four times, most recently in 2021. With 23 winning seasons, Ward has proven he can lead consistently with excellence, garnering an overall record of 318-155-78.
