LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (9-4-2, 6-0-1 WCC) outshot LMU (5-5-3, 2-3-2 WCC) 21-8, but left Sullivan Field with a 1-1 tie Wednesday night.
"It's bittersweet. We're really proud of that performance," head Coach
Tim Ward said. "LMU is a good team. Maybe not ecstatic about getting one point, but we'll take it and move on."
The Waves were on the offensive front to start the match, taking four corners and six shots on goal in the first half. Without one finding the back of the net, it was a 0-0 tie after the first 45.
Picking up the pressure, Pepperdine rattled off shot after shot, tallying 21, including 15 on frame throughout the match.
It was not until lucky corner number 13 the Waves broke through. A service from
Tabitha LaParl bounced around in the box, finding
Peyton Leonard's head before settling at
Layla Simon's feet for her to poke it into the goal. It is the freshman's second goal of the season and in the 79th minute, the Waves were up 1-0.
Just 8 minutes later in the 87th minute, the Lions would equalize with a rocket in the upper left hand corner of the net.
With just over three minutes remaining in the match, time expired for Pepperdine to find the game winner. Still undefeated in conference play, the Waves move to 6-0-1 in the WCC, good to keep the squad at the top of the table with four matches to go.
Up next, Pepperdine welcomes the Gaels of Saint Mary's to Malibu on senior day. Honoring nine seniors for the Waves, the ceremony will start 15 minutes before kickoff. The first 100 fans in attendance will also receive a Willie the Wave hat. The live stream will be on ESPN+ (subscription required) with live stats available on
