Waves to Take on Trojans

MALIBU, Calif. – The #8 Pepperdine men's volleyball team will make the short trip to face #11 USC this weekend.

LAST WEEK — Pepperdine took on BYU twice last week, falling in both after tight five-set matches. On Friday, the Waves took sets one and four but ultimately could not secure the fifth set, ending with a 15-12 set score. Pepperdine out-performed BYU offensively, posting 58 kills on a .272 clip as opposed to 52 kills with a .207 hitting percentage. Akin Akinwumi led the Waves with a double-double with 24 kills and a .415 success rate and 10 digs. Cole Ketrzynski added eight blocks and Andersen Fuller marked six. Four separate Waves recorded service aces to further the offensive efforts.
During Saturday's match, the Waves took sets one and three, but were not able to take the fifth, and dropped 15-7. BYU led in all statistical categories, except service aces, where Pepperdine posted eight as opposed to three. Ketrzynski recorded 19 kills, nine digs, and four blocks, and Martin De Chavarria marked eight kills and four blocks.
SQUAD — The Waves have gone 16-7 to start this season and have won nine of those matches in straight sets. As a team, Pepperdine produces 12.39 kills on a .315 clip, while adding 11.71 assists, 1.32 aces, 8.82 digs, and 2.47 blocks. The squad gives up only 10.41 kills on a .205 output on average, along with 1.13 aces, 8.01 digs, and 2.47 blocks.
Cole Ketrzynski leads the attack output for the Waves with 3.61 kills/set and 274 total kills. Ryan Barnett has also put in a solid presence on the attack front with 2.50 kills/set and 170 kills.
Ethan Watson and Martin de Chavarria lead the squad at the net with 1.45 and 1.18 blocks/set respectively. De Chavarria has produced 92 blocks, with 10 solo rejections in 78 sets, while Watson has amassed 61 blocks with 10 solo jobs in 42 sets played. Ketrzynski also leads the team with 21 aces and 0.29 aces/set so far this season, while four Waves have reached double-figures in aces.
Trey Cole has marked a team-best 2.16 digs/set, tallying 177 digs this season. Tyler Stewart and Ryan Graves have seen the most time in playmaking duties, having put up 8.04 and 8.03 assists/set respectively.
OPPONENTS — USC ranks #11 in the AVCA polls this week. The squad is 2-5 in MPSF play so far this season, and their last match was with the Waves two weeks ago. The Trojan's two conference wins came from a pair of matches against Concordia Irvine (RV) where they swept the Golden Eagles, then also won a five-set battle two days later. USC marks 11.9 kills/set and their opponents post 11.7, while they also dominate defensive efforts, posting 2.5 blocks/set as compared to their opponents 1.9.
RANKINGS — Pepperdine is ranked #8 in the AVCA national poll this week. After three-consecutive weeks at #10, the squad had dropped to #12, though a pair of wins against UCSB and an upset dub over #6 Stanford moved the Waves up once more to #10 and remained there for the second-consecutive week. After picking up a win against #11 USC, they slotted the #8 spot. The Waves began the season at #13.
In addition to the team ranking, the Waves have been making quite the splash on the team and individual stat rankings in this early season. The Waves rank first in the MPSF in opponent hitting percentage (.226) and second in team attacks (26.65) and third in digs (8.82), assists (11.71), blocks (2.47), kills (12.39) and hitting percentage (.315). The squad is also top-10 nationally in three categories, including eighth in hitting percentage, ninth in blocks per set, and tenth in assists per set.
