#7 Waves Open MPSF Action at #9 Stanford this Week

MALIBU, Calif. — The #7 Pepperdine men's volleyball team hits the road this week, trekking to Palo Alto to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play up against #9 Stanford.
MATCH #13 — Friday (February 17) at Burnham Pavilion & Ford Center in Palo Alto, Calif.: #7 Pepperdine (8-4) vs. #9 Stanford (7-4) at 7 p.m.
MATCH #14 — Saturday (February 18) at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif.: #7 Pepperdine (8-4) vs. #9 Stanford (7-4) at 7 p.m.

LAST WEEK — The Waves dropped a pair of tightly-contested non-conference matches against then-ranked #7 UC Irvine last week, taking the Anteaters to five at home before falling in four on the road. In the first match in Malibu, the Waves split the first four sets 27-29, 25-20, 20-25, 29-27, before the opposition took hold of the reins for a 15-9 fifth set win. Joe Deluzio led with a career-high 19 kills on a .471 clip, while Jaylen Jasper and Akin Akinwumi also amassed double-figure kills with 16 and 12 respectively. Bryce Dvorak had a team-high 51 assists and three aces, while Brendan Read led the squad with a career-best 14 digs.
In the final match of the week on the road, the Waves split the opening sets 20-25, 25-23, before the opposition took the final two 25-20, 25-17 to collect the victory. Jasper posted 16 kills, while adding seven digs, and Ryan Barnett was good for 12 kills on a .421 output. Dvorak posted 38 assists and also led the squad with nine digs.
MPSF WEEKLY ACCLAIM — Pepperdine collected MPSF offensive weekly honors for three straight weeks (weeks two-four). This season, Bryce Dvorak (1/16) and Jaylen Jasper (1/23, 1/30) have tabbed offensive weekly nods.
WAVES IMPRESS IN THE STAT RANKINGS — After six weeks of action, the Waves are second the nation with 13.45 kills/set, fourth with 12.55 assists/set and fifth with a .349 hitting percentage, while ranking 11th in service aces (1.86). Bryce Dvorak also ranks third in assists/set (10.98). Jaylen Jasper is second in kills/set (4.77), fourth in points/set (5.34), 8th in attacks/set (8.65) and 29th in hitting percentage (.419) among others. Trey Cole ranks 12th in digs/set (2.23).
OPPONENTS — Pepperdine leads Stanford 65-27 all-time, dating back to 1974 when the teams first met and the Waves won in a five-set battle. The Waves won the first 12-straight matches before the Cardinal won a five-setter in 1984. Pepperdine has recently gone on a 13-0 run since 2018, winning six of those in Palo Alto. Stanford has gone 7-4 overall this season and are ranked #9 in the AVCA coaches poll. The Cardinal has collected wins against #10 Santa Barbara twice and #15 Lewis, while dropping to #4 Penn State and #1 Hawai'i twice.
