Waves Travel to La Jolla for Next Outdoor Meet

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams will continue their outdoor season, traveling south of Malibu to compete in the Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 9.

The meet is hosted by UC San Diego and will take place in La Jolla, Calif. at the Triton Track & Field Stadium. The running events will begin at 11:10 a.m.

The Waves are coming off a stellar weekend at the CSUN Invitational and Stanford Invitational. Three new school records were set as well as multiple first and second-place finishes.

Senior Karl Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) set the record in the 5,000 meters on Friday at the Stanford Invitational, and on Saturday at the CSUN Invitational sophomore Ryan Hemphill (Visalia, Calif./Redwood HS) set the record in the 800 meters and freshman Thomas Lewer (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs HS) broke the record in the 400-meter hurdles.

Winter broke the school record in the 5,000 for the second time this season finishing in a time of 13:46.80. Winter previously ran the 5,000 a few weeks ago at the Bob Larsen Distance Invitational hosted by UCLA beating his previous time he set last season. Hemphill collected a first-place finish and new school record in the 800 meters clocking in at 1:51.34, which was 0.13 seconds faster than the previous record that was set by teammate Winter in 2021. Lewer finished the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.78, which was 2.1 seconds faster than the previous record which he set this season at the Beach Opener on March 5.

Sophomore Johnathan Flint (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) had a first-place finish in the 5,000 meters at CSUN, collecting a time of 15:07.63. Freshman Elias Spence (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area Senior HS) was behind Flint finishing in second place in the 5,000 in a time of 15:24.33. Sophomore William Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) had a great first-place showing in the 100 meters crossing the finish line in a time of 11.18. Watkins also marked a fourth-place finish in his heat in the 200 meters running in a time of 22.41.

On the women's side, senior Key Pearson (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Vistamar School) notched a first-place finish in the women's 5,000 meters clocking in at 19:10.34. Senior Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) had a second-place finish in her heat, in a time of 27.46. Egbo also collected another second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles crossing the finish line at 1:07.02. Junior Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) collected two second-place finishes in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters. Miller finished the 800 meters in a time of 2:24.86 and the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:45.62. Additionally, freshman Abigail Howard (Jefferson, Ga./Jefferson HS) finished second in her heat in the 100-meter hurdles, getting a time of 16.70. Junior Skyler Danley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) notched a first-place finish in the 3,000 steeplechase finishing in a time of 11:51.84.
