OPPONENT — Pepperdine and McKendree have met just once previously, a 3-2 Waves win in Firestone Fieldhouse in 2017. The Bearcats are receiving votes in this week's AVCA poll.
LAST WEEK — The Waves split two matches against then-#5 USC, winning in Firestone Fieldhouse in five sets by the slimmest of margins (four of the five sets were decided by two points), and then falling at the Galen Center in four sets two days later. Spencer Wickens averaged 4.11 kills and 2.00 digs (and had a 22-kill, 11-dig effort in the road match).
NATIONAL STATS — The Waves are in the top 10 in the nation in kills (13.00, fourth), blocks (2.61, fourth), aces (1.76, fifth) and hitting (.323, sixth) ... Bryce Dvorak is third in assists (10.82) and sixth in aces (0.62) ... Austin Wilmot is 10th in blocks (1.14) and hitting (.399).
IN-SEASON HONORS — Bryce Dvorak received his second MPSF weekly award of the season, this time for defense, on February 28. He averaged 1.00 digs and 1.00 blocks in a split against #5 USC ... Trey Cole was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week on February 21 after averaging 2.00 digs in two matches at Grand Canyon ... Jaylen Jasper was named MPSF Offensive Player of the Week on February 14 after averaging 4.86 kills and 6.00 points while hitting .563 in two matches against UC Irvine ... Dvorak (9.33 assists/set, .488 team hitting) and Austin Wilmot (1.60 blocks/set) swept the MPSF Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, on January 17 after two wins against Erskine.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
