PLAY-BY-PLAY
Kills and an ace from
Grace Chillingworth helped the Waves push out to a 5-2 start to the match, and though the Zags countered to tie the score at 8's, Pepperdine kept pushing forward with blocks from
Emma Ammerman,
Emily Hellmuth and
Kenadie Patterson for a 12-9 lead. More smashes from Hellmuth and Chillingworth helped the cause and a Chillingworth, Patterson rejection gave the Waves a five-point advantage, 20-15. The squad would ride the momentum through to a 25-18 first set win.
Â
After going point-for-point through the majority of the set, finding 10-10, 14-14 and 18-18 tied scores.  A kill from Ammerman kept Pepperdine moving in the right direction, and more kills from Patterson and Chillingworth put the squad in a position to close. An ace from
Riley Patterson and smash from
Meg Brown would do the deed and close the set 25-21.
Â
With a 2-0 advantage, the Waves came out ready to close, but the opposition had other plans. Though Pepperdine built a 20-15 lead throughout, a 5-0 run from the Zags tied things up and put the edge on the home team's side of the court. Gonzaga used the momentum to take the set 25-22 and force a fourth.
Â
The Bulldogs came out with the same energy from the following set, amassing an 11-4 lead early, but the Waves stayed close behind with kills from Ammerman and
Avery Shimaitis, a solo rejection from
Vanessa Polk and an ace from
Kayleigh Hames to make it a three-point deficit 15-12. Gonzaga would not let up, however, eventually coming away with a 25-19 set to force a fifth and final set. Â
Â
Pepperdine was ready to pull ahead early in the fifth set, building an 11-7 lead with kills from Brown and Chillingworth, but the opposition tied the score at 13's. Carrying energy from the rally in the previous sets and plays, the Zags posted a kill and a block to secure the 16-14 set win and the five-set league victory.
