Beach, Indoor Women's Volleyball Earn AVCA Team Academic Awards

MALIBU, Calif. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), in partnership with the United States Marine Corps (USMC), announced that 1,275 collegiate and high school teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Tam Academic Award for the 2020-21 season.
 
Collegiate women's teams represented with over 50% of the membership in all three NCAA divisions having won the award, including a new record of 243 DI programs.  Beach also had the most new collegiate programs participating with 12 teams earning their first Team Academic award this season.
 
The women's indoor squad accumulated an impressive 3.589 collective grade point average for the 2020-21 academic year.  14 out of 15 players amassed a 3.30 GPA or higher, while 12 collected a 3.550 average or higher.  Junior Madison Shields earned a perfect 4.00 grade point average during the year, while other notable GPAs were earned by Kayla Joyce (3.842), Lily Dyer (3.838) and Shannon Scully (3.826).
 
The beach team amassed a 3.494 combined GPA during the last academic year.  14-of-16 student-athletes totaled a GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the year, while 12 garnered an average higher than 3.50.  Junior Peyton Lewis earned an impeccable 4.00 grade point average, while other notable GPAs were earned by Simone Priebe (.3888), Carly Skjodt (3.767), Cameron Baklenko (3.768), Michaela Kasper (3.752) and Gracie Pedersen (3.745).
 
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
Women's collegiate teams were well represented; over 50% of the membership in all three NCAA divisions won the award, including a new record of 243 DI programs.  Mirroring the rapid growth in the division, beach had the most new collegiate programs participating with 12 teams earning their first Team Academic award this season.
